700,000 South Africans get free electricity from Eskom

According to the latest official numbers from Eskom, there are 900,000 South Africans registered to receive free basic electricity from the power utility.

In response to questions from MyBroadband related to the adoption of its Free Basic Electricity (FBE) programme, the power utility said that of this number, 700,000 claimed their electricity vouchers.

Might as well give everybody FBE if they're going to hike prices.

"The Free Basic Electricity Programme is a programme of the government, through which it aims to provide some free electricity to indigent households"
How many users out there are abusing this system eh? Not "abusing" it, rather a gazillion illegal and dangerous connections?

Place I rented previously was a 2 bedroom house in a solidly middle class area. Got rezoned a while back and ended up as part of an "indigent" area. I was getting Free Basic Electricity. It's a stupidly broken system.

0.0012% of the population.
If you want to do this. You would need to count per household not per person. As each person doesn't get electricity separately.

There's 11 mil households

So 1%.

Actually just measuring how much actual power they give away for free would probably be the most accurate. I suspect it is low, unless one of the leaches have discovered bitcoin mining.

What I saw in an "upper-class" indigent neighborhood - I mean big houses worth more than 1mil. Even there where they get some free and then only paying half price, is that illegal connections was still a problem.

WTF is an "upper-class" indigent neighborhood? If there are big houses worth more than 1mil then it's not an indigent neighborhood, is it?
Meaning that there is some "indigent" houses in that neighborhood?
I saw a neighborhood in my town a while ago, there was these R1Mil+ houses on one side of the street, and across the street these "indigent" houses that look worse than worse.

The Free Basic Electricity is 50kWh per month, per household (which would be per meter). So 700,000 would be about 35000 MWh per month.

Let's rephrase. 700 000 legally registered for free electricity.

Even then. Shockingly low.
