For R7000 you should be able to get yourself something better then a Celeron, oh and with that graphics card you aren't going to be doing ANY gaming.

You need to take in to considering such as screen size (14"/15"), kind of resolutions (XGA/SXGA/WXGA/etc), how much battery is needed, glossy or matte screen, etc.

My friend have bought a NB in China last month:
Core due 1.6G
965PM
512M DDRII 533 UP to 1GIGA cost additional RMB400
ATI M X1600
15.4 1280x800
80G HDD

Price is RMB 6999+400 equal to 925$ and equal to R6500.
hehe, but in China people needn't to pay 14% Tax.

I have a HP NX6125 Sempron, you can get the 64-bit Turion for around that price now. I would recommend against the celerons as they dont have speed-step built in (unless you dont need it to be TOO portable)

I could buy a Sahara 2 years ago for R6k with a Centrino 1.7 Ghz chipset. As was mentioned, i would also at minimum get a Centrino/Pentium M processor . [I would rather get a 1.4-1.5Ghz Centrino than a 1.6-1.7Ghz Celeron ..]

Also i'd look for those ATI type of graphics card on the laptop. I've had the Intel Extreme graphics on my laptop which is okish BUT it shares with the main memory. So when it says "up to 128MB" it is actually eating a chunk of that 512MB main memory [forcing you to buy more main memory..]. So calculate the cost of additional laptop memory into it.

As for main memory don't get anything less than 512MB , try get 1GB.

EDIT: Your Acer up there sounds expensive compared to this:

From http://www.comx.co.za/acer-laptops-south-africa.php
TravelMate 4072LCi Acer R 6650

Acer TravelMate 4072LCi (LX.TBC06.176),
Intel® Pentium® M 735 processor(1.7GHz, 533MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache),
Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional Edition, 15.0" XGA (1024x768) TFT LCD Display, Intel® 915GM integrated 3D graphics with up to 128MB (Shared) memory, DVD-CDRW Combo Drive, 60GB 4200rpm Hard Disk Drive, 512MB DDR2-533 RAM (1*512MB), 8-Cell Li-ion Battery, 10/100 Ethernet LAN, 802.11b/g Wireless LAN, no 1394, no s-video, no FIR, no recovery CD, Standard Acer pickup/repair/return 1 year warranty

OR
if you're not to much of brand buyer

Just buy more memory on this one:
http://www.comx.co.za/sahara-laptops-south-africa.php
NB7230-NF Sahara R 6280

SAHARA NB 7230-NF AMD Turion ML-30 2600+,
ATI RS480 Chipset, 64MB ATI Xpress 200G Vga on board, 1
5" XGA (1024x768) TFT LCD Display,
256MB DDR 333 Memory, 40GB 4200rpm Hard Drive, DVD/CD Writer 8X DVD+R, 4x DVD-R, 4x DVD+RW, 24x CD-R, 10x CD-RW Supports Dual Layer, 56K Modem, 10/100 Ethernet Lan, AC97 Audio, 1x Firewire Port, 3x USB Ports, Infra Red, 3-in-1 Card Reader (Mem Stick, MMC, SD), Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition, 1 year carry in warranty

My reasoning is, i rather buy cheap brand but top of the range laptop every 2 years for R7k, rather than buying 1 laptop every 4 years for R14k. My Sahara served me well so far. [But that's just me ;) ]

Anyway, same site, you can get an HP for R7k with the same specs as the Acer.

Hi All

Thanks for all the input, very much appreciated. I will be looking at all advice given. I did a quick check on the HP NX6125 64-bit Turion (1.8Ghz), but the cheapest I could see was approx. R8500.

? for ATI - any idea where I can get onje cheaper?

Thanks in advance.

KRegards

If you are or know of an Edgars card holder they are running a promotion on the Turion (Cant remember which speed) for R6000 its in the latest Edgars magazine. Thought it would be pretty much that price everywhere. Anyway i got my Nx6125 Sempron a while ago for around R5500 and brought an extra 512MB an it runs sweet, getting close to 4 hours battery life on the standard 6-cell battery :D

Hehe got a turion 1.8 3400+ laptop
Got it in taiwan for around R7600
100g HDD
1gig ram
wireless, bluetooth
dvd writer
2.3kg
4hour battery life standard
ATI graphics shared 128mb

So I'd say u can get a Turion around that price here
Maybe not with a 100g HDD but I'm pretty sure u can get one around 7k in SA.
Mines a presario v2607

Hi All

no need to bother, I phoned this morning, they are all sold out. Apparently they are discontinuing that range. Dammit!
The search continues...

Cheers

Shame man, yeah i know the NX6135 has just come out. Ok next thing I suggest go look at what HiFi Corp have, I know they have the HP Pavillion range. Now the good thing is once you buy it you get the HP guarantee and not the dodgy HiFi Corp one. My girlfriend picked up the DV1000 there for about R9000 last year. Last time i went there they had the Pavillion Z2000 range available in Sempron and Turion. So I would go give them a look, see what they have to offer, if they dont have report back and we will see what else is available ;)
