8 affordable projectors that don't need a TV licence

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and government are trying to find an alternative to TV licences, but the current scheme's end is not in sight.

However, there are various high-resolution projectors available to South African residents that can be bought without a TV licence and provide an excellent viewing experience if you use them in a room with little ambient light.

Lazy article with clearly only surface level evaluation of information. Should be taken down for spreading misinformation. Takealot should also have more regulated information on their site as its vendors are clearly lying to customers.

SABC presented plans to Portfolio Committee and plan to enhance license revenue collection by 19%, so their debt collectors will be active again.

You mean those spammy calls/letters stating that you owe them monies, that 99% of people ignore?

So its interesting that you can get 1080p native projectors for so little these days, but I doubt they could replace my TV, they'd be in addition to it.

Cost of bulbs? Really this is nonsensical. If you're going to spend extra money in order not to buy a tv you might as well fork out the R265 every year.

Ag come on. Support does not equal native resolution.
You could have done some homework to inform us of the native resolution of each projector. Bit of a wasted article imo...
Agree 100%
Support is just polishing the turd.
We want native resolutions please

Please do not think a projector is better than a dedicated TV!!! There are cons with projectors in general (eg. heat, noise, brightness, contrast, viewing distance/angles etc)
Here are a list of videos talking about it:

Not gonna lie.
The release of Dune Part 2 made me realize how much I miss having my 120" Projector and screen.
There really was nothing like it.

I binged Dune parts 1 & 2 on my 150" screen with 4K projector on Saturday evening. It was awesome ;-)

Part 2 was HD though, haven't got 4k version yet...

Yeah also waiting for the 4K version.
Jirre lekker dude, 150" is bloody massive.

I honestly had a better experience with my old setup than I did seeing it at Ster Kinekor.

Only reason I don't have it now is 'cause I'm too much of a pussy to try and mount that thing to a 3 meter high ceiling.... that's the thing about projectors, getting the perfect alignment etc. is an utter ball ache... also thought I'd be clever and save money by getting PVC blinds for my "cinema room", not realizing those things don't block our the sun properly... lekker stupid.

kudos for writing the article, but honestly if you are going to list products in an article that talks about replacing a TV it is really just negligent to not include the brightness levels of each projector....

When it comes to projectors, you really can't just compare on resolution, it has to include lumens to be meaningful? And possibly also power draw.
