Key Notes:
  • This was tested on Windows using cable and Wifi
  • This was tested on Android using Wifi
  • You can connect using a usb cable and/or Wi-Fi
  • You use a normal size sim card (not micro-sim)
  • Works with any 3G internet provider
  • You can use a mobile app to monitor the device

Steps to take
  1. After unpacking the box, follow the instructions to set up Wi-Fi or just connect the sub cable and install all the required drivers.
  2. When attempting to go access any website you will be taken to the default http://192.168.0.1/html/home.htm because internet connection has not yet been established because all default settings are for Vodacom.
  3. Login with the default ‘admin’ password (I recommend you change it immediately) and navigate to bottom of the page and notice all admin links
  4. First ensure you specify your sim card’s pin number if required by navigating to Mobile Broadband->SIM PIN Management
  5. Navigate to Mobile Broadband->Connection
  6. Change Account type to Custom and specify only the following:
    • APN *: Internet
    • Number *: + (you can even add your 8ta cell number like +2781231234)
  7. Click Save
  8. Expect your status icon to change to green and you are good to go.

I believe a number is rather your dialing number *99#. typical for establishing data connection.

Does Huawei have their own dashboard for this router like Mobile Partner for the modems?

Anyone else having any issue with 8ta and the Vodafone R205 where sometimes the connection doesn't work properly i.e. some sites don't load properly and you can't even get to the 8ta website at all. Switching off and back on again seems to sort the problem out.

Seems to be happening quite often for me the first time I switch it on for use. Then I have to restart it.

And in the same time other sites do work? When it happen check if problem is related to your DNS server. Ping to the known IP adress, by example google.co.za is 173.194.34.127. If you site respons, then you should perhaps use google DNS server. Post here assigned DNS addresses which are not working.
Alternatively type nslookup <name of not responding site>, it should resolve to IP address.

Check for assigned DNS addresses with command "ipconfig /all".

It is difficult to give solution here, as you have couple tuneling connections, and I don't know how thes things come on:
Code:
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : User7-Pc
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : gg.com
[...]
DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : gg.com
If problem is on this affected PC only, then look how to remove these entries, I am not expert, but result you can see here:
Code:
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.101(Preferred)
[...]
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
[...]
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
192.168.0.1
These addresses are wrong, unless you run DNS server on your network, which I doubt.
I suggest as a temporary relief to use on your PC static DNS servers either saix, google or any other.

That's for the office network. I'm using the R205 at home.

It problem is on this affected PC only, then look how to remove these entries, I am not expert, but result you can see here:

[...]
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
192.168.0.1

I tried changing the dns servers on the R205 to Googles i.e. 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, but then it didn't connect to any sites at all. I can try those dns servers on my, but I wanted it on the router as there are other devices connecting via wifi.

Even when you specify the dns on the R205, the pc will still only show the routers ip address as dns.

I assume other devices suffer the same problem, otherwise you would simly assign static DNS on PC and problem solved.
Can you access router's configuration page when problem arise? I'd like to see DNS server's (auto-assigned) values. I bet there are both 0.0.0.0, if true, then there are failover values and I want you to do the following test:

Edit: The following is assuming modem drivers are installed, but manual only says about NDIS interface.
Connect router to PC using USB cable and after drivers are installed and you can see modem device, open Hyper Terminal and check for the command:
AT^DNSP?
If not getting error, but response is 0.0.0.0 (default), then you can change it to 8.8.8.8
The same with AT^DNSS for secondary failover DNS server.

Commands above affect modem device inside router, not router itself.

Please can you help me step by step to set up this router for Cell C - not even Cell C could assist me....

STEPS:
1) Connect your device on the PC and install the driver application that comes with the device (go to Computer, then click on Vodafone Wifi Installer... it appears as a red icon under Computer on Windows Explorer).
If using a laptop, just turn on the device with your 8ta/CellC sim card inserted in it (I coudln't get MTN to work unfortunately).

2) Take note of the device's SSID and Wifi key coz you'll need it (it's on the lid of the device)

3) If using a laptop : Ensure that your laptop can detect available Wifi devices but enabling the Wifi key on the keyboard or by turning the Wireless button to "On" if using HP laptop.
Connect to the Wireless Network that's available and key in the Wifi key as prompted.

4) Go to Internet Explorer (not firefox, and not chrome) and type vodafonemobile.wifi

5) In the password section (top right corner) enter "admin" without the (") and login.

6) Specify your sim card’s pin number if required by navigating to Mobile Broadband->SIM PIN Management
Navigate to Mobile Broadband, then to Connection

7) Change Account type to Custom and specify only the following:
APN *: Internet
Number *: + (you can even add your 8ta cell number like +2781231234)
Click Save
Expect your status icon to change to green and you are good to go.

(If you can't change Account Type to "Custom", use Internet Explorer, not Firefox nor Chrome coz it won't work)
