80Mbps broadband access on Telkom’s roadmap?

They cant even supply me access to a 10 meg line, cause of the dslam, so how they going to manage 80Mbps when they take forever to upgrade exchanges and dslams

^^ yip, Telkom is aiming to high, finish with what you currently have then go onto newer stuff man.

iBiWiSi for now

In November 2011 Telkom officially announced that the company will launch 40Mbps broadband services by 2015 and increase the speed of their entry-level services to 2Mbps.

So 80mbps by 2019 with 4mbps as entry-level :p

I assume what they are wanting to do with this though is move the dslam side away from the exchange and into residential areas (running fibre between the street cabinet and the exchange) and then copper for ADSL from there to people's houses.

If so then that would be great :) How long it will take them though is another story :-/

Telkom could not immediately comment on their MSAN and broadband plans

Sheesh, more hot air. I'll believe it when they start delivering 4Mbps consistently across the country without major exchange contention. Maybe worry a little more about your network to the exchange before you start with billions on the access layer...

Don't get me wrong, I would love 80Mbps, I just don't see it being delivered at a reasonable price to more than 1% of the ADSL users (that is 7 000 clients to be more specific). If 4/10Mbps is R410 on top of line rental can you imagine what Telkom will charge for this!!

I have a few choice words for mybroadband.

If you cannot guarantee the bull**** that "well placed source"s say then mybroadbrand should not write it. I am tired of reading from the authors of these bs articles which ultimately are used to pull in readers.

So in summary if mybroadband are going to say anything you should have the name and or title of the "source" or STFU because these articles are full of ****.

I understand attracting visitors and members to the site is important but this is bull ****.

This site started as a customer action site, but at the moment it has lost its way and i am losing respect for mybroadband.

So in this case STFU mybroadband.

I would assume that they would have more pressing issues like supplying some of us with a stable 4meg line perhaps?

It is more likely to snow in Joburg in January than this fairy tale to come true.

Even if they "are" working on this little dream of theirs, experience have shown that they will complete it YEARS after their first envisioned completion date. Furthermore they will handle it the same as the fabled 10mb lines which they will only provide in a few choice exchanges so that they can tick the "we provide 10mb access" box but not implement it on a large enough scale that the bigger population can benefit from it.

I'm sorry to sound so negative, but this is just the reality that Telkom has shown us over many many years, and until they can consistently prove otherwise, this is what the public will believe about them.

I see the possibility of a huge fine from the Competition Tribunal / Competition Commission has not been factored into this article.

Also mentioned so far is the backhaul issue - what is Telkom doing to alleviate contention on even their optic fibre routes?

Pricing - probably going to be scary!

The MSAN pilot projects? MyBB reported on them late last year; any updates?

Nice to know we can rely on Telkom to bring us today's speeds tomorrow.

This also seems to be a poor business strategy, won't most major cities have fibre or at least be nearing fibre by this time?

They should stop trying to upgrade the maximum speed some exchanges can obtain and start upgrading every exchange to at least offer a 10mb service. Our exchange for one can only handle 4mb a user. There are too few 10mb exchanges if you ask me.

I'm expecting this project to be put on hold in a few years, followed by Telkom asking government for a bailout

+1

... And we need ports too. I can't get ADSL and I live in the 'economic powerhouse' of the continent

All cities and most towns already have fibre, but most of it is in the core network (core to exchange).

The problem is to replace the copper in the distribution network (exchange to customer). The current lengths of copper are too long for the provision of higher speed services.

Full replacement is FTTh, which works well in a concentrated, densely populated area and requires massive investment. In Australia the national government is pumping billions of OZ dollars into their rollout.

The next level is FTTc, where you run fibre from the exchange to a "street box" and then copper from the street box to the customer. This shortens the overall length of copper cable, currently the biggest prohibiter to decent broadband. These "street boxes" are the MSANs.

Don't tell me what you may be able to deliver years into the future...tell me what you can do for me NOW or tomorrow.
