Hi Mojo29

Unfortunately, currently the Internet 5 Promo customers will not be able to add a secondary device (MAC address in the Self Service Portal).

Thank you

Has anyone been able to get this to work?

I have been to the Telkom store and the best the lady could do was tell me I had to visit a certain hairsalon to be able to use it????

What frustration to have this carrot dangle in front of you and not being able to reach it!!

So Mr/Ms Telkom, here I am a prepaid customer. I have tried to connect with my laptop to the telkom connect wifi to use the bonus 10GB wifi I received without success. Can you please take me on a step by step process of how I can get connected. If you are going to be using acronyms like EAP - SIM please do explain what it is not the defination but if its a number where do I get that number etc. For example the MSISDN is simply the mobile number.

Do I need to have the modem connected whilst logging onto the telkom hotspot wifi?

So lets pretend I have fired up my laptop and within the radius of the telkom hotspot. What next should I do?

Hi Joshtromp

As per post #20 on this thread
EAP stands for Extensible Authentication Protocol
SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module

You are a prepaid customer so you will need to connect with a device with the SIM inserted. For example a cell phone. You will not be able to connect with your laptop, as it (and or internal modem or USB dongle) is not EAP-SIM capable.

If you insert the SIM in a EAP-SIM capable device then you do the following:
  • Switch on Wi-FI
  • Search for Telkom Mobile Connect
  • Ensure you change your authentication to EAP-SIM
  • Click on Connect
  • (Ensure Mobile data is off)
  • Then open browser

Thank you

Ok, so I got feedback from Telkom.

Not good news for me though.

I use a modem on my laptop, so seeig as I do not have the EAP-SIM feature on my modem,I'm buggered.

Only for smartphones I gather. Darn!!

I tried today connecting to TELKOM Guest Wi-Fi hotspot at The Glen. It asked me for a username and password, banner displayed the free Wi-FI but had to send an SMS. Weird I tell you

After battling for months with this, and losing many Gigs worth of wi-fi data, I finally went into the Telkom Shop in Sandton City to ask how to access my monthly wi-fi data on my 15Gb + 15Gb contract, and was told by a gentleman with dreadlocks that "The wi-fi access doesn't work, it never has, that's why we give everyone 60 minutes free every day!" When I explained that I wanted to be able to use more than 60 minutes some days, and that I had paid for that service he told me that I hadn't paid for it, it was free.!!
I have tried everything on this thread, please could someone with a brain from Telkom tell me what to do next? Thanks.

Register your mac on Telkom Mobile site............remembering to enter in caps,

or

Just change your EAP method to SIM when connecting to Telkom Mobile Connect

And done. SOMETIMES the connection requires at least two or three tries before it connects.

Thanks for this, can someone tell me where to change the authentication to EAP-SIM on Android? Is it under advanced options before connecting?

When I try to connect to the network, it says that it is connected, however the browser doesn't have any throughput. I phoned 8ta and told them that I do not have an EAP-SIM option available from the drop down menu. I have TLS, TTLS and the closest I see is PEAP.

so after much debate today this is what I discovered for my particular scenario:

1) First register on the 8ta self-service Portal using the details you used to take the contract out.
2) Connect to the Hotspot "Telkom Mobile Connect"
3) EAP-SIM ---> Set your EAP Method to "EAP-SIM". When you use your browser, you should be redirected to the Self-Service Login Page and off you go.
4) NO EAP-SIM ---> Set your EAP Method to "PEAP". Set only your password to your Self-Service Login Password. All other fields remain blank. When you use your browser, you should be redirected to the Self-Service Login Page and off you go.

This is what I have been told by the very friendly, knowledgeable lady at the Call Centre (081 183) today. Power failure at the moment though and the HotSpot is not showing up, so I haven't had a chance to test it yet.

EDIT: The latest is: I can't connect to this particular hotspot because it belongs to a technical callout centre, despite it being listed on the 8ta coverage map as a HotSpot. You have to access your wifi data through an actual 8ta/Telkom Store.
Hi helpful Telkom guy...
I too have been having troubles connecting to the Telkom hotspot near me..I can see the hotspot just fine but when the options come up about protocols and so on i dont get the EAP-SIM option..Only some others which the post above mentions..I also get the PEAP option...Will that work?Cause it jus kept disconnecting every time it did connect. The above post also mentioned that if you dont have the EAP-SIM option you select the PEAP and then only put your Self service password in..Is this correct?I guess i will go try that out and report back but any useful info you could share regarding that would be great...Also confused as to how the "Telkom Connect Guest" works..Something about 60min free if you SMS the word free followed by your email address..Tried that, got an access code and a PIN but was stumped after that..No idea on what to do with that..Pls help
