Clasified Information/State Secret?

Hi end3ff3ct

We would like to contact you to clarify the confusion. Please PM us your contact number and well as the Telkom Mobile number.

Regards
Telkom Mobile

All over this thread I see "PM us ..."

Would it not be better if Telkom provide the full information somewhere so that everyone that's entitled can access it?

The information should also not be so incomplete as its currently and nearly hidden.

Come on Telkom, do you really want people to utilise the service? Or do you just want to brag about it?

I am investigating the possibility of building an app (for myself) to do all the configuration quick and easily.

So instead of posting an Apple config file, publish the information:
SSID: ?
etc.

If EAP-SIM is not available, is there another option?

[There are currently worldwide more Android devices than all of the other together, if one can believe Wikipedia.]

I have a similar problem to end3ff3ct in that I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with a Telkom Mobile SIM card but can't find the eap-SIM option. I tried PEAP with my self service password (as suggested in an earlier post) but that didn't work.

A lot of phones as well as Android versions don't support EAP-SIM. Basically if you have a newer iPhone, iPad or one of the latest Android phones you can access it.
It's just another one of Telkoms useless offerings.

PEAP will never work. Do this...

Go to http://www.telkommobile.co.za/login/
Select Off-network
Sign Up
Bottom right ---> Specify MAC address of a second device
Input MAC address using CAPITAL LETTERS.

I haven't gotten around to testing the second device yet. Will report back.

So, I'm trying to hook up the MAC address but that field only accepts numeric digits (ie, 0-9) but my MAC is in hexadecimal. Any ideas?

EDIT: I missed the "CAPITAL" letters part... Seems to have accepted my MAC address now. Now just to check that it works.

Sitting in McDonalds, connected to Telkom Mobile Guest wifi network from my laptop. Couldn't connect to the Telkom Mobile Connect network, but this one seems to be just fine. Did a quick speedtest and got 3Mbps down. Not too bad.

Just a pity I can't connect my tablet (with the Telkom SIM) as well.

So after a number of contradicting conversations over the phone, in store and from the MyBB rep (once again highlighting the incompetence of the standard Telkom employee) it would be really good if someone could simply give a definitive answer: is it possible to connect to the Telkom Wi-Fi service with a non eap-sim capable device?

In case anyone was wondering, the short answer is you only have two options to connect:
1. EAP-SIM
2. Registering your MAC address on the self-service site.

The PEAP thing doesn't work.

Ok I have a Samsung Galaxy Fame which is a new model. It is running Android Jellybean. My 8ta SIM card is 2 years old. Do I need a new SIM to be able to use EAP? I can't be the phone is to old as this model has only been on the market 9 months.

hey 8ta! share with all of us! I also had no luck trying to connect to a WiFi hotspot with my "free" 10 gig... I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 plus...

Hi P1373R, it is a simple process but first how old is your android version? Mine is 2.2 so it wont work. Check that under settings>about phone>firmware version.

If your version is 4.0 and higher. Turn on your wi-fi if not already on look for Telkom Mobile Connect>click on it>EAP method should display, select SIM. Good luck!

I've registered my MAC address on Telkom mobile's Self service portal. then i connect to wifi "Telkom Mobile connect" and asks me for username and password. I enter self service username and password but doesn't register and gives error "windows was unable to connect to Telkom Mobile connect".

any help here from the forum or Telkom would be brilliant - Thanks!

I have the 10+10GB and a voice contract. Each gives me unlimited WiFi each month (10GB full speed).

To use the free WiFi you have to do some setup work:

I had to use the website to do the following:
1. Register my Phone's MAC address on my DATA contract as secondary device.
2. Register my secondary device(my laptop)'s MAC address on the VOICE contract as secondary device.

Then, at the WiFi hotspot, connect to Telkom Mobile Guest. It connects without any password or anything else. I can then surf or download.

My phone is Nokia Lumia 920 and supports EAP-SIM authentication according to Microsoft and Nokia but it always asks for a username and password on the Telkom Mobile Connect server. Till now. I am a member of the Microsoft Windows Development group and just loaded the new WindowsPhone 8.1 OS(Releases in a month or so). It supports EAP fully and allowed me to select SIM verification when using EAP. I went to a Telkom WiFi Hotspot yesterday and it connected with no problems!

Things I learned from the past year's battle:
1. Telkom operators are trained to handle 90% of calls coming in and these WiFi/EAP-SIM calls are not part of their training. At least not when dealing with Nokia products.
2. The problem wasn't with Telkom all-along. After updating my WindowsPhone OS, the problem went away. Telkom just didn't know what to do.
3. When using the secondary device MAC address you have connect via Telkom Mobile Guest. Telkom Mobile Connect is for the primary device using SIM authentication only.
4. Share what you have learned and make everyone's life better!

Link please!

Maybe someone should inform the telkom shop at Kollonade Montana, the guy there had no clue what to do when I asked him yesterday. He actually wanted to send an sms from my phone for the 1 hour password.

Then when I asked him what the 10240MB data in the sms meant he told me it was the speed!!! :D :D :D

I told him straight that he was clueless and left before I lost my temper.

Option 2 only seems availible to contract customers. :(
