Anyone in PMB finding their 8ta data connection playing up every evening around 7pm?

I broadcast my wifi over a router, and every evening I have trouble with it - its as if when the network is busy your connection gets dropped if its not actively in use. To remedy this I have to unplug the modem from the router, and plug it back in again to get the connection working again.

However, during the day, it remains connected all day - uber frustrating.

I stay in JHB North by the way, so perhaps its not a geographical problem...

This suggests two related issues.
1. The tower you have good connection is congested and when it happens you are forced handover to another tower.
2. Such another tower gives lower signal strenght/quality and modem is allowed to transmit inreased power. This creates another problem, as many routers are not able to handle such power requirements.

You can deal with #1 by installing external directional antenna to improve signal and keep connection with this tower. This is the most efficient way.

You can also deal with power problems by installing external power source to USB modem and relieve router from this duty. Also try to reposition modem to get stronger signal. Do it during rush hours.

On my 3G router I get allocated IPs in the range 41.151.x.x or 197.?.x.x.

While connected to 41.151 speed/performance is OK, but when connected to 197.?.xx performance is really bad.

I've been experiencing this problem for a while. Within a period of 2 hours my connection dies. I found a fix on this site.

This seemed to fix my problem.

7pm just gone and the connection is playing up again. Interesting to note it's not geographical.

Speedtest.net running fine but browsing is a nightmare

JHB North, same issue. After 18:00 the connection speed becomes useless and sometimes unusable.

Or I can deal with it by not renewing the contract come November. It seems with 8ta you get what you pay for.

Last time there was a thread about this the rep asked us to fill out a form with details of the problem. Never filled it out cos I do not have much else TO TELL HIM/HER other than what is said in thread already.

Actually you have something to say. Your connection will be monitored (if you give them your number) which will help them to see how serious problem is and possibly fix a problem, or at least change long term infrastructure development priorities in your favour.

Don't worry, same here in PTA East.

Very slow between 19:00 and 21:00, rest of the time it is super fast. I use it for backup to ADSL line issues and to download stuff faster (when I need to) than the shaped 1mb uncapped line.

Guys, just check if it can be fixed by using alternative DNS servers. Yesterday about 18:20 I had unstable network, eventually it stopped responding, changed to google 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, no more problems. JHB/Diepslooot.

Check your DNS servers in command line "ipconfig /all". To change, disconnect and edit TCP/IP properties of your network connection.

In the past week my connection has been very unstable! It keeps switching from 3G to EDGE and I need to remove the modem to get back on 3G!
