When I got my 8ta Promo 5 contract, the speed and service in my area was pretty good. Then it got so bad I had to get an 8ta techie to my house to try and sort it out. He could not do anything about the bad signal, so 8ta said I can cancel my contract at any time without penalties.

As a last ditch attempt, I bought and installed a directional antenna pointed at the Randjiesfontein tower in Midrand. This improved the signal immensely, but created a problem with the placement of my 3G router. This I sorted out with a variety of products.

Anyway, over the last couple of weeks the signal has been so bad that, at times there is no 8ta signal at all. This was tested with different USB sticks in the router or in my laptop. The results is always the same on router and laptop via 8ta Connect. I would either have no signal, or, when there is signal, I would not be able to connect to it. This weekend I could only connect for 30 second until it disconnected. This happened once, the rest of the time no signal or no connection.

I think it is time to cash in and go somewhere else. I have the "get out of jail free" email form 8ta and I think I must use it. It is sad, as, when I had good reception, I was hitting 8Mbps download and 4Mbps up.

Here is some screenshots of what is happening:

Having the exact problem in the far south of Jhb. At first I thought it was my modem, changed that, same happens. Was getting tons upon tons of disconnects, 3G throughput was terrible, cannot resolve host, etc etc.

It's better now, but not where it was. Throughput just isn't consistent as it was. Still get fluctuations. YouTube also battles to stream.

Last 2 days I have been unable to connect at all. Mostly no signal, but when there is signal, it refuses connection.

You are not alone,

Here in little old Richmond we have one TM base station (2G & 3G) and without fail once a week is goes offline.

No signal what so ever for about 4 days, you can do a manual network selection on your phone & 3G stick and all you get is MTN, Vodacom & Cell C.

No 8ta/TM.

Now the best part is, we are in a high copper theft area, when the base station goes down so do all the FLLA lines (033 Fixed Wireless Lines), half the town sits without land lines and us using the internet 5 promo are screwed.

It has been like this for well over two years and we have all logged faults coming out of our ears, but slowly people are canceling their services and moving to other networks and using VoIP.

So I give Telkom Mobile/8ta another year and not a soul will be using their services in our area.

When I do a speedtest the results are good but when I try to download something the download speeds are extremely slow. I have tried to download from different sites but the results are the same. Webpages also open slow.
