Hi

I recently got myself an 8ta go big promotion package. Something does not quite seem right, I can't get more than 3.2mbps DL. I have the cell c 5gig package as well and that gives me over 8mbps constantly. When I use the 8ta no matter what my signal is I cant get more than 3.2mbps, like a soft limit, I have over 70% signal on the 8ta but no matter where I test it it limits out at 3.2mbps, I am using the same modem for both.

Does anybody know if it has to do with my settings or something? I am using a tplink router to establish the connections using the black cell c hauwei modem. I get sub 60ms pings on the 8ta which serves as a further indication that the signal is not that bad. How can they advertise 21.1mbps and I only get 3.2mbps.

This is really frustrating I need the speeds. I got it because our adsl line sucks at home and the 5gigs on cellc is not enough for my needs.

Please any help would be appreciated.

This was random tests to 3 different servers all with that same limit... Which looks allot like the speed people get on 4mbps adsl which, makes me think this is running on some weak backbone...

Those speeds are about what I get at most locations, about the best I get is 6-8 Mbps, tho I am happy with anything over 2Mbps ...

Yes that is what I would expect my cell c gets me constant 7-9mbps. On 8ta I can see how the speeds climb fast up to 3.2 and then just gets stuck there. So I believe that it has something to do with a backbone link or something. Great latency and great signal strength but speeds seem capped. See my post above on speed tests I conducted.

I received a call after posting here, they escalated my query to level 2 and they said they are sending out a technician, to have a look. So kudos to 8ta for having a good social media strategy, and handling of my issue thus far... Hope they can do something about it! :)

Hi yes,
Got an update speeds are actually slower now. :p

And very weird jumping up and down the speed test graph looks like an EKG. Hopefully it is a sign that somebody is working on the issue rather than the service degrading to a point where it is very bad!

I'm glad to report back!

Thanks 8ta seems like tonight my speeds are way better!

Just downloaded the ios5 update for my ipad and it flew! that promted me to do a speed test!

Test conducted on Wed Nov 09 2011 21:00:33 GMT+0200 (South Africa Standard Time)

Download Speed: 6062 kbps (757.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 660 kbps (82.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 70 ms

So it does look like telkom are taking service seriously! I will now sign up for the midnight surfer as well.

Thanks again!

I have that router that's what i use to connect! Its very cool! So I can highly recommend it! I am also considering to get myself the antenna and coupler, but my signal is actually strong as is, my problem was probably due to a poor/bad backbone link form the high site.

I got the Antenna today from them, have the same router as you, i installed it but am not sure which way to direct it as it is a directional antenna.

My signal did go up 20% but i am sure its directed the wrong way

Yes thats the issue with directional antennas, the margin in which you can move is so small. But within that lies the benefit also, the radio waves are focused on one point so all the energy is directed at a single spot, so that translates into higher gains if you point it in the right direction!

As a tip might i recommend you use MDMA (search the forums for it) on your pc. plug in the modem use mdma to get better readings of signal strength. Then slowly ( remember the margins are quite small) move your antenna in a direction, wait a few seconds then move a couple of degrees further. You might have had a great spot but because of the delay in the refresh of the web interface you could have missed it. Then once you are happy, fix the antenna in that spot do a final test and tweak a bit. then remove the modem from your pc and plug it back into the router, et voilas!

Hope it helps!
