“We want to make sure that people really understand the true impact of what they are getting themselves into,” said Topham.
“I am very sceptical of an asset class which has nothing behind it, nobody behind it, and not even an address anywhere in the world,” he said."

And I'm extremely skeptical of some finance d00s who pretends he's "clamping down" for my own good.
The only worthwhile lesson I've learned in life is DO NOT trust anyone who pretends they're an expert, especially when it comes to making financial decisions, and especially if it's someone who claims they care about you.
Do your own research.

An "an asset class which has nothing behind it", yeah sure, as opposed to the money-out-of-nothing printing scam that is today's financial system. This "nothing behind it" claim has been debunked over and over again. And yet so many still don't get it.

"He added that their view does not change the fact that many people are investing their savings in cryptocurrencies."
Yeah, because volatility or not, you'd have to be an idiot to keep your money in Rand right now given the fact that the fiscal cliff is coming towards us at the speed of light.

We all saw first hand what happened in Zimbabwe a few years ago when the chickens came home to roost.
People actually clamouring to get into Zim to sell crypto due to the inflated prices driven by a desperate people who had nowhere else to turn to after the dollar there also saw it's own gat.

“People must not see in any way that we are giving a rubber stamp of approval to crypto assets.”

There have been numerous cryptocurrency scams which have resulted in thousands of “investors” losing a lot of money.

Topham said the planned declaration will help them to clamp down on these crypto scams in South Africa.

When the declaration of crypto assets as a financial product comes into force, crypto exchanges, advisors, and brokers will have to be registered as FSPs with the FSCA.

Unless this is done, the crypto platforms and advisors will commit a criminal offence.

Class A doublethink here. Why are they so afraid of people spending their money as they see fit? Oh right, it is because BTC is a far more secure place to store your money than the South African Randela. No-one can simply print off 2 trillion BTC.

Oh noooo my crypto businesses need to be regulated to give advice or sell services...The ****ing abhorrent horror of it all

Don't bother to actually read what the workgroup is doing or suggesting. Much more fun to waffle ahead

10/10 sensible

The people need protection against themselves. They cannot be trusted with their own money. Some poor granny will invest i this nonsense and lose her pension

The only scam the people of South Africa need protection from is the ANC and SARS lol

Just another way for them to try and take a bite out of South African's assets.

Also,
The guy who thinks there's nothing behind crypto wants it regulated as a financial product.
The irony is thick.

Its that same paranoid rhetoric why Finalmente,MTI and Finiko are so pervasive and able to steal people blind

You just trade a governmental thief with some legal protections for a random internet stranger and 0 coverage

Why does it need to be regulated?

To keep complete and utter scams like MTI out of the scene for a start.

Beyond that is also legitimizes the entire industry which is a great thing all round.

And further to that it generally protects people from themselves and also stops dodgy business being dodgy.

I fully agree with your other post though at the same time as well.

No idea what you're on about, my crypto is safe and secure thankyouverymuch. No regulation needed.
Worth a kuk-ton too at the moment, not that I'm planning on selling anytime soon, or probably ever actually.

I'm also for regulation in that respect, however, I'm also extremely skeptical about regulation in general.
I do agree though, regulation does add confidencec etc. in it and could be good in the long run

They've been very pro regulation from the very start so have pretty much been waiting for this. Wouldn't be surprised at all if they've been advising on this front even.

Or am I missing a deeper question?
