Well, i've done this to one of my lines and YES the data rate was upped to 4mb on the ADSL side. the BRAS still needs to be upgraded but this is a user account issue so that will be automatic for all ADSL users.
2) If found the old marconi routers are crud, my line handled 6.8mb/s quite comfortably during the test phase and with the marconi I started seeing errors and had almost no connection (+- 2km from exchange) with the 4mb link, checked on a cisco (clean as a wistle), plugged in a billion 5100 and 5102W also the lines great, tested on the old Alcatel speedtouch home (that okay too!)
Lesson, test with something other than the marconi before getting Telkom to down your datarate to 1mb if you've got problems.
3) had a Telkom 5100 ADSL router that popped, took it into Telkom and they swopped it out for a 5102 wireless, I don't know if this is standard now as the old stuff is now in short supply, but if your Telkom 5100 is in warrantee and toasted you may get a 5102W instead.... Yipee
4) lastly, to give you an idea of what the attenuation and SNR is on a FTTC (Fibre to the Curb) installation. from this the theory seems to indicate, a maximum data rate of 8MB on this line as capacity utilization is only 47% on 4MB, the uplink is a little worse off, but max uplink would be a shade under 768kb/s
Now why don't we all have these kinds of links... with a DSLAM 50 metres away!
