I saw that line and my first though was "you are trying to justify being a cnut.. so GFY".

My experience with most tow truck drivers in the last 10 years has actually be very pleasant tbh and they aren't vultures like they used to be anymore in my experience.
Sure they nice and sweet but their primary objective is generate revenue for the towing company, not to hold your hand whilst they wait for the ambulance, so the poster is correct.

I've see the parasites cutting off ambulances so they can get to the accident first on more than one occasion here in PE.
Can't remember the highway in Cape Town (N2 or R44?) but there was a multi-car pile up involving trucks carrying chemicals or petrol one foggy morning. Remember it being one of the worst in SA history at the time. Witnesses said that so many vultures descended that emergency services struggled to get through, while some people were burning to death, stuck in their cars.

I never said they were nice and sweet, but they don't come across as vultures anymore.. at least in my direct interactions with them at accidents. Granted having insurance is probably the reason they aren't vultures...

Those ambulances though...they're vultures.

Recently experienced a bunch of tow truck drivers all helping us with a dog hit by a car in Randpark Ridge. They were awesome.

Yeah small things like that that I've experienced as well in the Pinetown area with our local tow truck drivers.

Yes, they're all still rough as nails as people, but they are working with their community and have built up a level of trust and respect actually.

I had to use tow truck 2 or 3 times (only via AA) and only once I got ripped off by tyre price but I was just thankful that guy came in relatively quickly as it was 0400 hours and tyre burst happened in the middle of nowhere and spare tyre was not in good condition.

Are they at least trained basic or advanced first aid so they can be of some sort of assistance when arriving first?

What about the turf-wars and violence that goes with the industry?

I'm sure there are a few hard-up folks that turn to tow-trucking as a last resort for income, but there are a multitude of reasons as to why they have the reputation they do.

No excuse. A flawed business model is onw who generates profit on failures.

They're sharks and will remain sharks. Anyone with proper insurance knows that your tow service is not some dicks waiting for accidents to make profit. Profit should be seen by persons responsible for creating solutions reducing accidents, breakdowns etc...

Any respected IT person knows it's not about fixing issues but avoiding it.
I agree with the sentiment on the forum, but by using your reasons then private ambulances and funeral parlours are also a flawed business model

But truth be told, I'd rather have them there than rely on government services. Say a private ambulance and a towtruck dice to meet me and my car there, at least both know a thing or two about medical and the towtruck can help make the area safe so I don't burn alive.

Did you not say your experiences were pleasant?
If they were NOT nice then you can't say it was a pleasant experience.

Who doesn't like helping dogs?
It's the humans they treat like crap.

The kind of tow truck drivers I have seen will probably purposefully swurve off the road through a ditch just to ride over a stray dog

An interaction can be be pleasant without the person having to be nice.... a completely professional and efficient experience can be pleasant.

Especially when you're expecting it to be a vulture like and unhappy expensive experience.

No, they provide a service not wishing more people get hurt or die.

This isn't a response I believe is common among emergency response:

At times, we sit endless hours on the road, only to return empty-handed.

The reason they are seen as vultures possibly has to do with them always being at an accident scene way before any emergency vehicles arrive. Or maybe because it is sometimes 4-5 of them at a 2 car collision. Maybe it's because they lie that the other parties insurance will cover your tow and you have to pay a small fortune to get it back. Maybe it's because charging R1650 to tow a car 5 km to their yard is a bit excessive. Maybe R1400 storage fee for 5 days is a bit excessive. Fukk them.
or because a few of them have been caught damaging traffic lights to generate business.
