After reading OPs post I am considering to sign on the dotted line with Telkom Mobile. That is a sweet deal but hopefully one day Telkom Mobile/8ta will have another clearance *like they had about 2 years ago if i recall correctly*.
Do not get the Note 2!

Highly doubt it that they will have another clearance sale, as they dont have a lot of cheap phones anymore.
But just by taking any of their contracts, you are already getting fantastic value for your money.
They huge haven't test driven one myself but did play with 1 in a public place overheard that this lady went to the SP, they weren't helpful at all. 5 minutes with that beast I set up everything for her and told her careful smartphones are data hungry reduced her bill from R1200(data only) to R200-300 per month
Possibly they will have another clearance sale if inventory doesn't move*Normally what they do with old stuff keep it for spares if a customer brings in a handset they replace it for free*
as @cavedog mentioned the paperwork, going back and fourth, have read this thread a few times where people drive 100 KM, to their nearest telkom mobile store. They should offer something like Telkom Mobile Direct( contact them telephonically free delivery) Even if it means you need to send through a copy of your ID certified etc. When driver comes everything checks out.

is the 5gb data they give on these contracts every month or just a once-off? the website does not state clearly which...

i wish i could say thank you to Telkom Mobile but unfortunately i can not.I am having horrible experience with Telkom Mobile now and so far still no solution....they have messed up everything..
I have signed Samsung Galaxy S4 with smart plan 100.
I had already Telkom Mobile prepaid number (071896....) before i have signed contract....i have asked sales guy to put this contract on my current number.they couldnt convert prepaid to contract .They gave me new 061...number.i told them i dont want new number..
while they were busy converting contract to prepaid number some unknown reason My prepaid number has been erased from system and so far still does not work.i have lost my communication with my customer...
they erased my seven years old number from system and they can not make it work so far...i am so disappointed...
Also Samsung Galaxy S4 packed up in 7 days and they didnt gave me new phone too.i have no line, no phone but i have got email today indicates me i must pay R649 to Telkom Mobile.....So lovely isn't it....i am so disappointed i wont recommend to sign Contract with Telkom Mobile...If you dont want to loose your Health...Regards
