A large number of domestic workers have lost their jobs so far in 2018

No real surprise..

Domestic workers are a luxury for most people and would be one of the first things to get cut.

Yeah they rather go with maid services that actually perform.

Ummm no...

Most people actually just start doing the stuff themselves like most first world countries. Maid services are even MORE expensive than a domestic worker...

Yes but they actually do their job so don't have to have them clean every week.

That is entirely debatable.

My domestic worker is awesome and cleans brilliantly, and I would struggle with anything less than once a week.

Depends on the size of your house and you don't end up at the ccma for something stupid.

My comment is more based on those who have gotten rid of the domestic... They by and large will do the work themselves rather than get in a maid service...

Here's my problem. The lady who works here used to come at 8:00 and leave at 4:00. Now its 8:30/9:00 to 2:00 and the house is only superficially clean. I spend Saturdays cleaning behind the bath, under the beds, inside the cupboards etc. I'm not prepared to repeat myself ad infinitum. When she's asked not to pour grease down the drain, two weeks later it's happening again.

She always wants more money over and above her increase when taxi fares go up.

I like her very much and I'm incredibly lazy, that's why she's still here.

My experience with using a cleaning service, instead of a domestic worker, is that they are fast and efficient. They are more expensive, but worth the while when 4 of them come in, under supervision, start cleaning, washing, etc. and then leave in a few hours. Been making use of them the past 3 years and will gladly pay the premium.

Hope for your sake she is old and will retire shortly.

I switched over to a maid service. Yes it might cost more. But if I am not happy they give me someone else. If I don't want someone for a period, I don't pay. They provide their own food. They provide their own transport. If there is an issue they resolve it. If the maid doesn't pitch up they need to make a plan quickly. No more crap. No more issues. And the job is done.
