Has anyone reading this studied for (and passed) their MCSE via an online course?

Have been quoted R13000 by New Horizons in CT for an online course inc the above.

This is more than half the price of the same courses done "in house"

I work 9 to 5 and live far from the NH Center so the online route is appealing.

But cant afford to throw money at something that's not going to help me reach my goals.

Has anyone reading this who has perhaps taken the above route (or not) please share some advise?

I completed my A+ in 2002, worked in non it related industries between 2004 and 2008, and have been working as a technician / manager for an internet / sales and repair cafe since 2008.

Meaning that while my technical skills are fair to good; I don't have a lot of Network Administrator experience yet.

Thanks.

Buy yourself the books for the MCSE and self study then register for the exams at any test center. No need to go through companies like New Horizon etc.

Most of the study material for your N+ can be found online for free at places like:

I agree. If you plan on doing it online, you might as well go the self study route.

All the resources you need can be found in books and online and usually costs a fair amount less than online courses.

Hi Mate,

CBT is the way to go. I have some Linux tuts, N+ and busy getting the basic MCSE (Exchange route , not security). There is also some Cisco ones as well.

Please do not pay one of these places 10k , 20k + for this as it will be a waste. Self study plus get some XP in the field and you will be good to go.

EDIT: PM me if you need them.

They are pretty good, im currently doing my MCTS - SQL 2008 course through them, part time as I work normal hours.
So far im enjoying it, place it decent, the study is self motivated, but so far so good.

Thank you so much for the replies.

Seem like most people (who've commented on this thread) agree that self study is the way to go.

If I went the CBT self study route; would I need to then write the Comptia exams for A and N+ and the Microsoft for the MCSE to get any kind of Certification on paper?

In other words how would I get accreditation through the self study route?

Hi Mate,

It doesnt matter how you study or how you learn. You jsut write the exam when you are rdy, pass it and you get your cert.

It doesnt say on your cert that you didnt study or whatever 0_o :)

Just had a look at the CBT site and their material is quite pricey.

Would work out to about the same price if I went the New Horizons route.

Has anyone passed their exams via self studying the Mike Myers series; A+ N+, MCSE?

Good point.

Thanks.

Am now looking for the best material to prepare myself for the exams.

Besides CBT can anyone recommend any other good study material?

I passed 5 Citrix exams using the product documentation that shipped with the product. Also did an MCSA using various books that I downloaded from torrent sites.

I did most of my MCSE a number of years ago using the Sybex books as my main study reference. I had colleagues course materials from class based courses but found the Sybex books easier to work through.

I was also working in a Windows server environment so the practical experience helped hugely.
I did one class course for one of the modules, but did not find much benefit of it over self study.

I doubt A+ has changed that much over the years, it's just a very basic run down of hardware, how to troubleshoot etc... There are some useful nuggets in there, but most of it is very simple. N+ offers a very high level view of networking, with some details I found that is never used in the real world. Useful qualifications to have, though they not high value.

MCSE is pretty easy and as long as you have enough motivation self study is a breeze. I did my MCSE that way and its not rocket science.
