a petrol pump hit my car

As I drove in at a 1Stop to fill up, one of the petrol pipes were laying far [60cm] from the pump ,and as my car drove over the pipe, it pull the pump cover over on my car. Car got a dent.

Went to manager and saw the whole thing on cctv again.

Apparently the petrol attendants must see that the pipes are out of the driveway.

We took each others details, so hopefully they will pay for my damage [dent fix].

So let me get this right...... you drove over a hose that was lying on the floor.... as a result the pump cover was dislodged and fell on your car.... and now it is the petrol station's fault?

Would the easier route not just have been to avoid driving over the hose if you saw it lying on the floor?

Yip, sort of an integral part of driving making sure there is nothing that can damage your car in front of your car.

Reckless and/or negligent driving. In a 1st world country, your insurance should have paid the damage to your vehicle and any 3th party. Then a docket should have been opened against you for the above infringement. Probably a fine should have been your 'sentence' :D But, this been Africa, go back to the stupid petrol attendant, call him names to intimidate him. Then take the idiot to his manager. ***** both out in front of the public/stuff and ask for a new car :D And pleeease, next time you go to a petrol station, try to avoid driving over any gear which might be lying around :D

Bad luck I guess, but I'd expect pipes lying 60cm into your lane to be pretty obvious.

I don't quite see how you'd get money out of this one. If you take it to get repaired and send them the bill, they can just refuse to pay it.

If you report it to the police to get insurance involved, the garage could probably take you for damage to property. You drove over their equipment. They didn't throw a cover against your car. Then you're liable for the damages. Insurance might handle it, but you'll still be paying the excess.

If I saw a hose from a petrol pipe laying on the ground I would be absolutely terrified of driving over it and setting the entire creation on fire.

I'm petrified of Petrol stations. If someone drives in and carries on smoking I pay quick and leave even if my tank is not full.

driving over a petrol hose = suicide IMHO

Agreed ... and IMHO that's not rocket science!

according to the sentence he saw the pipe laying on the ground? then drove over it?

... which makes it a deliberate action? And could possibly void any subsequent insurance claim? By the way who is your insurer? I think we need to pass on the circumstances of your "accident". :erm:

I have to agree with you. Smoking on the forecourt of a fuel station is just plain stupid. As Jeff Foxworthy would say, "here's your sign".

It's also extremely selfish. If somehow a fire were started and it injured or hurt someone else  I would never forgive myself.

Having managed a service station a fair while back, for my sins, I can tell you that I saw some "Darwinian" behaviour take place on a regular basis. And the looks of disgust I used to get when I went across and told them politely to please not stand right next to their filler cap with a lit cigarette dangling from their hand less than 30cm from the fumes! If it were not for the other lives in danger I would have been tempted to let them remove themselves from this earth of ours! ;)

Can a petrol ignite from a simple Cigarette?
Since there is no flame on the Cigarette itself, I would think that the cigarette alone could cause it. If someone is stupid enough to have a open flame(lighting the cig) near the petrol fumes I can see it igniting otherwise I just don't see how its possible.

Errr "did you know static electricity is the main cause of fire at petrol stations?" So yes a cigarette will ignite the fumes if done deliberately...

Having said that, has it ever happened before in SA?

No ways can a cig ignite petrol, take a little petrol and put it in a coke bottle cap and put a cig in it and the cig dies try it you will see.

Have never heard of anything, okay but static is a a discharge(that tiny spark of electricity is enough to light the fumes) of energy that can ignite the fumes but we talking about a cigarette here.

Yes cigarettes also give off a discharge.
Petrol fumes are highly flammable, holding it a couple times near the fumes might not do anything. But if you take a pull... it will ignite the fumes. If you throw it on the ground it might ignite left over fuel on the ground. If ash it on the floor its enough to ignite the fuel. Youd be surprised to know how much is on the floor at filling stations...

We too did this experiment once and yes the cigarette did go out, however, would you be willing to try this with a 20,000l tank of petrol though?

Remember too that standing next to a filling petrol tank means concentrated petrol fumes (petrol and oxygen mixed), not throwing the butt into a container of petrol.

Feel free to take your chances..... just please make sure I am no where near when you decide to apply for the Darwin awards!

a cigarette will NOT ignite petrol or petrol fumes, it is not an open flame that is igniting vapours.
