See - I have sympathy, we're all stupid in a myriad of ways. I just would have taken the knock, chalked it up to "stupid stuff I should avoid doing" and moved on.

Anyone driving around should be aware of what is going on around him at all times...sorry, this "accident" was imminently avoidable!!

I just hope that this guy lives nowhere near me or any members of my family!!

In terms of the OP, he asked for all the abuse he is getting in this thread...

Driving over a petrol hose is stupid at the best of times.

About the cigarette lighting petrol:
It 'might' be able to light dense fumes, but it's not warm enough to light petrol.

Remeber the Cigarette might be 700C, but the fuel has to 'heat up' to 270C. So the cigarette transfers heat to the petrol, but it itself starts losing heat. It soon drops below the 270C threshold, possibly before enough petrol near oxygen has reached this threshold.

Poof - smoke out, and no fire.

If the petrol is in a dense enough vapour, it can ignite, and transfer enough heat to the rest of the vapour to cause a chain reaction and big fire. Petrol pumps are designed in such a fashion as to avoid a dangerous buildup of fuel vapours, but as allways - **** happens.

An open flame can much easier light the fuel, as there is a constant addition of energy (the burning butane for instance). That allows the fuel to heat up, vapourise and catch fire.

The no-smoking warning near petrol also indirectly mean 'no lighting your cigarette', which keeps darwin award nominees from exposing the fumes to open flame.

"No I didn't have an open flame, I just lit my smoke".

Yes cigarettes also give off a discharge.
Petrol fumes are highly flammable, holding it a couple times near the fumes might not do anything. But if you take a pull... it will ignite the fumes. If you throw it on the ground it might ignite left over fuel on the ground. If ash it on the floor its enough to ignite the fuel. Youd be surprised to know how much is on the floor at filling stations...

crap. I challenge you to light petrol fumes with a cigarette. It isn't possible.

So if I throw petrol on the ground and throw a cigarette in it, nothing will happen?

If I had to pump petrol and pull on a cigarette it wont ignite?

As a smoker. sometimes you ash and the wind blows it on your hand it burns you...

I worked in a petrol station when I was in school and I smoked near the petrol pumps while filling cars, in the hokkie, all over the place.

It's safe.
