Both my parents deceased and wife parents divorced and relativly poor so had to pay most ourselves. Got married at home with family, food afterwards with family and friends at restuarant, honeymoon was 2 days at private reserve in mosselbay.

You guys have some really awesome down to earth wives. A lot of women I know expect a minimum 50k spent on a ring....

You'd be surprised at how much money is spent on rings. One of my clients spent over 370k on an engagement ring. Money simply isn't an object to certain people.

If my bf proposes with something like that I'd say no

Firstly. This thing about the engagement ring must equal your gross monthly salary in value is bull.

Rings. It is symbolic. It isn't a Competiton, no matter what the aunties says or comment.

Spend more on the honeymoon than the wedding. What. Yes. You are getting married, not the 100 guests. In truth. Elope. Have a great honeymoon and then go back, ask forgiveness and have a bring and braai

When you are married for a couple of years, if you aren't that other 50% that are divorced, then you can renew your vows. And make it a big party. Theme party might also work

On a serious note. Don't make debt for your wedding. I've seen people marry, divot and still pay of the wedding debt

R2008 (second time around the block for both of us)

Wedding days are made for guests who like to complain about food, food portions, decor, wedding dress, liquor quantities etc.

So we decided....fsck'em. We're spending on the honeymoon

got married 18 december 2010

found three rings i liked and took a trusted friend with for a second opinion. we agreed on the same ring. R28k (8 months' salary!).

wedding: 100 people, R34k (including wedding dress). father-in-law kindly offered to pay once everything was organised.

honeymoon: 29 days SE asia (malaysia 3 days, singapore 3 days, thailand 23 days). about R30k.

all paid for cash. i went ring shopping to find the right ring, irrespective of cost. one of the final three was actually less than R5k.

the wedding was everything we desired. it was a wonferful celebration of something new, and our way of saying thank you to many of the people we love. some prices i remember: first-choice venue (two sections of the establishment, R12k) and they catered (R50/head - tip: lunch weddings are WAY cheaper). blues/jazz trio band 3k. photographer 3k. dress 4k. cake <1k (lindt chocolate bride and groom statues!). flowers R250. we honestly don't know how people spend so much on weddings!

wife is a teacher, i was studying full-time, so we had plenty of time for honeymoon. thailand is super cheap! it was a wonderful opportunity to create strong, loving memories that we cherish dearly :)
