A question for those who got married in the past few years

It is hey... And here I was hoping to get married next year :(
My advice...
Do NOT bankrupt yourselves on the whole event. The majority of the people attend weddings for the free food and booze and don't give a schit about the two of you. Rather have a very small, intimate ceremony/function with your closest family and a friend or two each. Don't go on a honeymoon for the sake of tradition. If you both really want to go for a holiday, be sensible about it.

I agree entirely.
As I said previously, going overboard in many respects will set you back for years.

And then you get these geniuses who borrow money from the bank for their weddings.

A close buddy of mine borrowed R150k from the bank for his wedding in December 2012, the kicker is he's currently separated from his wife, and chances of reconciliation is not looking too good.

Thought I would add my 2 cents, long time reader never a poster.

Ring(her) - 7500 this was 7 years ago and almost 5 month salary at the time. I bought a complete set then which made things simple when we finally got hitched last December.

Wedding - 200K 75% father in law, 25% us.

Boose for said wedding - 50K my family contribution, 100 people

Honeymoon - 0, havent had time yet hopefully soon. Budget for this 40-50

We saved for a long time for all this if it came down to loans etc.. would rather have a small family get together. +1 on not bankrupting yourself for the 1 day

well have a lekker fat student loan to pay off first... But I'm sure I can reduce costs by doing some things like the cake, dress, invites, flowers myself and by not having alcohol. I'll just be happy if my surname changes and I can eat so much cake that my dress tears :D

I don't drink so don't really care about those who do... Alcohol is expensive anyway. tap water ftw :D

You don't have to go overboard though.
A bottle or 2 of spirits and some beers, just let your friends know that there won't be much booze and they are welcome to bring their own.

Or buy pineapple beer poweder and brew your own, just don't come complain to me when all your guests go a bit loopy :D

the guest list will be a little shorter if the invites say no alcohol will be served ;)

Or just buy a couple of bottles of Chateau Le ****/J.C. Le Roux and scatter them across the tables, and list that there will be a cash bar available for those who want to drink. I've been to many weddings that took this approach.

To the guys without at least adding a year to make things relative, would you mind editing your posts? For obvious reasons 10k in 1980 is not the same as 10k in 2014 :)

This was in 2010

Shotgun FTW! :p

I should add that I did have her go pick out a proper ring a few months down the line after I've saved up. :)

10k rings. 90k for wedding and 15k for honeymoon.

This was in April 2013 and I was 28 and she 25.

Aah, I didn't take note of the cheapskate clause.
;)

You'll be better off for it anyway.

Id work on R100 per person for drinks, anything more than they they can pay themselves.
