Hey that's my old stomping grounds!
Considering the amount of urban sprawl/growth in the population distribution that has taken place in NJ over the past 15-20 years, this was only a matter of time.
There are two large air force bases in South Jersey. McGuire AFB which is non-fighter, cargo plane. Atlantic City ANG AFB. This is a NJ state run, fighter plane defense base near the ocean. They have about 15 F-16's parked along the run way at any given time. You can see them if you drive past. It is really cool when you get to see one take off or land as you drive past.
My dad used to weekend at the Atlantic City base, these are some of the planes that scramble out to intercept unfriendly intrusions on US air space. But they are mostly used in Drug missions in South America, where the staff provide logistical assitance. My dad used to go to Panama in the '80's with them. I can tell stories about drug smugglers and cooperation with US officials, but that would be a different thread.
Bottom line, Tons of people, Small area to practice in. Will probably happen again someday. Glad no one was hurt, and the AF paid out.
