MY grandfather was a magistrate and it was one of his least favourite words. If you said ascertain, you had better be sure of you pronunciation otherwise he'll find you in contempt. A-certain was acceptable. Acetane was asking for a smack. We learnt the hard way not to mess with Oupa's wise ways. So we never used that word. Ever. Still today, 20 years almost since his passing, it remains unused.
