Hi All, I need some advice. My Mom's credit card got knocked for R43000 the Friday night late and she cancelled the card the Saturday morning first thing when she saw the sms's. When she cancelled the card there was 4 transactions pending at the time but eventually went through. ABSA came back and said the claim has been declined with no reason or explaining why.

I have sent an email the their ombudsman for further details. Anyone can offer some advice?

Tx

The limit was R25 000 and then the rest of the money was her own cash.

Instruct them to inform you in writing as to denial of claim. Also, raise it with the banking ombudsman but I suspect there's more to this story. Was there a 3d secure component etc used? Most banks will refund credit cards, no problem UNLESS there was a two factor authentication used.

She probably got phished. Write it off as school fees and move over to Capitec bank. Absa won't and don't have to pay when it's the client's fault.

She tells me now the new Credit card she received with a reduced limit is showing -25000. Can she be held liable for the banks money that was stolen?

If the OTP's were sent to her phone, then how did the transactions go through? Were they transfers/swipes/online purchases? Are you not confusing transaction sms with OTP?

Not sure how ABSA works, looks like online payments from her credit card when I look at the sms, then OTP got sent to her phone.

Some places allow the transaction to go through when otp doesn't respond. Had my card cloned and cancelled but still receive otp now and then as the card details likely got sold.

Was a Payfast, 2 x Foschini Group payments and Airtime from Cell C all transactions in Capetown and she lives 1800km's away.

Sounds like a phishing more than anything else, someone got hold of her banking details so it's not strictly credit card fraud.

Payfast normally use 3dSecure, how was that got around?

R13, that would put the onus on the merchant to prove the transaction but him saying its denied so quickly seems like they had access to OTPs or banking app.

Not sure how they could have access to her OTP's as the phone was in her house on charge while she was sleeping. Banking app if she was phished yes but how did they get around the OTP?

If they have the app, that acts as the OTP rather than sms.
