Press statement from ABSA

Hot on the heels of a steep increase in fuel prices in South Africa, Financial Services Group Absa today unveiled a rewards deal that offers 5% bank sponsored cashback on purchases at all Sasol branded service stations.

This exclusive offer provides added incentive to the approximately 1.3 million Absa Rewards members that will also have the ability to earn 5% in cash rewards simply by swiping any Absa card within Sasol Convenience Centres.

“What sets Absa Rewards apart is its simplicity. Customers don’t have to remember to carry an additional card or make complex points conversions. We have no hidden costs, coupons or punch cards. For Absa Rewards members it’s as simple as swiping an existing Absa card and getting cash back,” says Absa Head of Retail Banking Arrie Rautenbach.

He explained that through the fuel rewards offer, Absa Rewards members would typically save an average of 11 litres of fuel in cash rewards per month and extra cash savings within Sasol convenience stores that would especially benefit travellers.

“We are delighted at the prospect of joining the Absa Rewards programme as a partner. This development will enable customers to earn 5% of their spend back at our Sasol Convenience Centres,” says Alan Cameron, Managing Director of Sasol Oil.

In addition to the fuel rewards offer, Absa Rewards announced a partnership with Dis-Chem that offers an extra 15% benefit when converting Absa cash rewards to Dis-Chem benefit points. Absa is also offering new customers who take up vehicle finance or register for Absa Rewards before 31 October 2013, a chance to win one of forty R5000 gift cards from Tiger Wheel & Tyre.

“Most loyalty programmes are points based or have expiry dates on points/miles, making it hard to maximise award value. Our aim is to ensure that our customers and clients get a full service bouquet, but at the same time getting paid real cash for using their Absa debit, credit or cheque card as we understand that even the most valuable loyalty currency isn't the same as cold, hard cash,” says Rautenbach.

“It is imperative for us to make sure that we offer our clients a straight forward and easy to understand rewards solution. This is in line with our focus to make customers’ lives much easier,” he concludes.

The unfortunate thing is that it looks like I'm paying more for Absa rewards than what I'm making. Will see if this makes a difference otherwise I'm going to stop it.

Apparently there is a 1 month cycle period. Which starts in the middle of the month. However you still get the cashback if you joined in the 1st week of the month.
They have limited the fuel rewards to R3000/month, so that it can't be abused. This means you will get 5% back when you spend up to R3000 at Sasol.

So basically they capped it at R150 per month? And then you have to pay a monthly fee for ABSA rewards (R21).

Yep.

If you don't use your cards a lot at the shops or the amount that you use is low, then it won't work for you.

Basically use any of your cards at the shops and refrain from using cash.

Certain accounts or customers (like me) get 1% back on all swipes. Anywhere.

Interesting! I do have 3 accounts so I might qualify for this.

Edit okay wait:
Simply use an Absa Debit, Cheque or Credit card to pay for your purchases, and depending on the number of Absa accounts you hold, you will automatically earn an extra percentage of all purchases back in Cash Rewards, paid directly into your Absa Rewards account. There is no minimum spend amount, so you start earning from R1.

There are different tiers, based on how many accounts you hold across different product categories, which determine what percentage you will earn. Please note that multiple products of the same tupe (for example, having two savings accounts) will count as a single product.

Tier 1: earn 0,25% if you have one transactional account.

Tier 2: earn 0,5% if you have one transactional account and any two qualifying accounts. For example, a credit card, together with a personal loan and vehicle finance.

Tier 3: earn 1% if you have one transactional account and any three or more qualifying accounts. For example, a cheque account, together with a credit card, home loan, vehicle finance, and a savings account.

So you need 4 accounts? I have a cheque, savings and cc...

thread resurrect ...

Just to revisit this. I did end up subscribing to ABSA rewards and I am saving around R100 per month because of it.
(rewards for last month was R125 - R21 rewards fee = R104)
I am not a big spender on my CC but at this stage it seems to be worth it for me.

I don't know where the nearest Sasol garage is - I haven't seen one in ages.

hmm so on avarage about R35 for every tank of fuel so R175 a month minus the rewards fee hardly seems worth the effort.

No, AFAIK it is capped it at R150 per month for the fuel. Hardly any "effort" for me since I drive past a Sasol every single day on my way to work. This just about pays for my banking fees so I dont see a reason why not to...

Yea, they have tried to get me to join "rewards" several times.

Never been worth the effort for me. Costs money and I don't go to any of the shops they mention.

Also, if I use the garage work uses, I get 40L free petrol a month (and it's not Sasol).
