While waiting for my wife to get her hair done so we can watch game of thrones, I randomly browse youtube and come upon this:

Holy monkey, this is some of the most insane stuff I've ever seen. There was more than once where I went, "What the what?!", including 9:09. I don't even know!

Its hard to have sympathy for the bikers when they got 40km/h faster than the speed limit and go through red robots.

Makes my recent scooter accident (in which I broke something) look positively tame. :erm:

If there's one thing we can take away from this, it's that a pedestrian crossing is purely for decoration.

You're a relatively new biker aren't you?
I'm starting with it, got the learners, been riding a mate's bike for a while - am I guarenteed to get into an accident?
Still not convinced about the whole thing.

You do realise that the actors in Game of Thrones actually cannot see who is watching the program? So your wife having her hair done, or not, would not really matter?

I have seen some very serious accidents involving bikes. Even had some very scary ones myself. Fact is, the enjoyment out weighs the odds of a serious accident by a billion. No amount of pain or the thought of death can deter me from riding my bike.

You have to experience a true superbike to understand where I'm coming from. A Scooter or even a 400cc just does not compare. You start experiencing what I'm talking about from 600cc upwards.

Of course not
Ride like a chop and the odds increase exponentially that you'll have an accident.
Be alert, ride decently, leave your ego at home and realise that even if you are right a 1 ton car wins every time, and your odds decrease dramatically.

This coming from someone who started riding in the middle of Cape Town winter every single day, having never touched a motorcycle before.

I ride a bike (when it's not raining) and I regularly watch bike crash compilations. I do it to remind myself how not to ride like an idiot and what to keep a look-out for.

A lot of those crashes were from really bad choices in riding, such as cutting down the outside of stopped traffic.
You will always be at a risk on a bike, simply because you tend to be invisible to motorists.

Driving like a lunatic does not improve those odds :D

:D tha's the point 'innit

On topic - morons on two wheels are no different from those on four - except that those on four tend to take more people out with them and have a much higher chance of surviving.

Currently not riding, but boy do I miss it....

Had a chance to watch the vid, I counted (out of who knows how many) 16 which were not the bikers fault, but I think all except two could still have been avoided by being more alert.

The little advice I can offer is:
  • Don't pass standing traffic near intersections because someone might be joining without looking assuming that traffic is standing still.
  • Don't pass cars on their left hand side (for us in SA) if there is an intersection coming up, they wont be checking mirrors before making that turn.
  • Don't stay in a blind spot longer than you absolutely must
  • Be alert for pedestrians weaving between standing traffic
  • Only go 30km/h faster than the traffic you are in, to a max traffic speed of 80km/h, then you should rejoin normal traffic
  • At a stop stay in first gear with an eye on your mirrors so that you can avoid the person behind you should he not brake in time. It also helps to be to the side of the lane
  • And just a general, don't go fast, which should happen naturally if you follow the above.
  • Always check the cross traffic at intersections, even at traffic lights. Applies to cars as well with all the people racing through red lights these days

Damn, some hectic stuff there!

As much as I like the idea of getting a bike (traffic and fuel consumption), when I see accidents like this I like the idea less. Most of these accidents would've been far less hectic (note I said "most") if it was between two cars, and not a bike and a car.

Notwithstanding the above, still wanna get me a Harley when I grow up! :D
