Been a biker since shortly after birth, progressing from nappy rash to tar rash by mid-teens. My current scooter is a VMax 1200 liquid-cooled V4 shafty, which packs enough ponies to flatten my stomach while accelerating uphill. Few things better than a powerful throb between the legs, bending the iron steed through twists and turns and then opening its throat to eat fifty metres of tar per second.

Bikes are mobile mechanical IQ testers. They quickly deal with operators who fail to adequately compute the odds of keeping soft-tissue intact at the fine balance-point where physics and biology intersect. Balance starts in the mind, and draws on both the senses and good sense. Staying upright on two wheels isn't that hard. But knowing when and how to do it takes some discipline. Exhilarating when it works. Deadly when it doesn't.

Some lessons in the video.

Just a question - how many meals would this bike have purchased for the starving?

Really? Explain?

They are generally more aware of their surroundings and also go out of there way to make space for bikes, unlike cars.

Taxis understand you aren't competing with them for the road and in no way inhibit their ability to make progress, so are quite friendly towards bikes.

I very rarely get "surprises" from taxis(minibus taxis) where as I get at least one a day from cars that either don't indicate at all or indicate for one blink of the light before doing an action.

Taxis are very courteous in comparison. Towards bikes specifically, not in general.

How many meals could it deliver faster than anything else?

While also bringing more joy to the starving in question.

Don't fool yourself, the biker fraternities do a great deal for charity.

So, mini-bus taxi's care more about motor bikes than other motorists on the road (i.e. cars). I must say, this is the first I have ever head about this. Never knew they cared about any particular motorist other than fellow taxi drivers. What do you think makes them more courteous to bikes than to cars?

Like I said already they know that you aren't competing for road space with them and they won't get there any slower because of you.

I'll ever partake in the taxi hooting code with them sometimes to say thanks if my hand is free enough.

On the flipside every idiot in a 4x4 feels they need to make the size of their vehicle known and block you because how dare you get to work before they do. As if they were going to get there any faster.

Not many meals but plenty of toys and even taken underprivileged kids for short rides with charity events and things.

*****

FYI your fancy BMW could buy five times more meals than his Piano.

Even more since its the older model and probably bought second hand.

But who's counting anyway.

Umm - but I am not the one claiming to be pious and religious? I acknowledge I am nothing but a bag of meat and blood, with some synapses that bring the whole together. I just wonder at Arthur, with all his beliefs, and proselytizing here, admitting to having toys like fancy motorbikes when he could be adhering to christian ways and filling a child's empty belly instead?

You are obviously special.

Considering the motorcycle in question is at least 10 years old and possibly a lot older than that I bet it's worth less than 50k.

Rather modest then and not very fancy at all.

But Arthur can answer for himself.

Irrelevant. But how many meals do you think R50k would buy for kids who are starving?

Pay attention next time you see taxis and bikes together.

Happens to the multitude of bikes I ride with in the morning.

Jeez on the N2 you can keep at 120 next to the bus lane if you were brave enough to trust the cars, because the taxis leave a massive lane for you.

Do you expect him to walk to work now or what?

How many hypothetically meals less would they get if Arthur couldn't work for a lack of transport.

Stop being obtuse.

So you know all the means of transport he has? By the way - Arthur has said here before that he is "fortunate" enough not to have to work anymore. Try another angle, shorty :)

Patience, brother bikers. Have compassion on Splinty for gratuitously deflecting yet another thread to his own agenda. He suffers from quite a severe God Problem. He thinks anyone (and me especially) who believes must perforce be a hypocrite, and he's out to convert them or at least show them up no matter what or where, even in the Tiddlywinks Club. Such evangelical zeal is to be admired!

@Splinty: Do you mean cheapy little ratpak meals or fullblown steak and veg with wine at a good restaurant? That makes quite a diffs. Please let me know what sort of a meal you have in mind for The Poor and I'll do the maths for you.
