Currently have a netgear adsl wireless modem upstairs. There is a Ethernet cable running downstairs where i wish to either put in a access point or extender. Thinking an access point is better as i believe extenders don't have Ethernet connections?

Is it possible to make the access point work like an extender in that there is only 1 network?

Any recommendations for an access point?

If you add an access point you will have to have a different channel so in effect a different connection.
If you put another access point down stairs on the same channel you will very possibly have problems channels will clash so degraded signals.
Have you tried just moving your existing wireless point around to see if you can pick it up down stairs ??
Orientation of the antennae can also improve or hinder propagation .( horizontal or vertical)
You could also change the antennae to a more efficient one .
Which NETGEAR do you have ,the dgn2200 you can change the default 154Mbps to 300 Mbps try them on the different settings.

Definitely need another access point, the signal has to go through the concrete slab and a few walls, its quite far. Will just get another access point. Thinking netgear since the d-link I had was absolute rubbish.

half my house is double story, the part that is single story with fewer walls it's no problem and can reach far, but the double story section has trouble. Depending on the signal path it would probably have to travel through a slab and at least 3-4 walls from upstairs to my room where i need it.
