I don't want to discover anything other than the tower I connect to ... This might help me a great deal.

Well from using GRES's trick, I figured out that I bounce between Roodepoort and Northcliff.
So I moved the UTD around until it could only see the Roodepoort tower, and my Latency and speed improved quite a bit.
It would hand over between the towers every 5 mins or so.

I also am thinking of building a Delphi or C-Builder app to pull the information for you. Keep log files as well so you can see what is going on :)

Some additional Q & A info from GRES that may interest others ...

Q:My UTD is picking up 3 towers with various signal strengths. Does it use all three or only the best one?

A:no, only best one

Q:Can speed/reliablity be increased by masking off poor towers (by positioning antenna were weak ones are blocked)?

A:no, depend of good one

Q:Can the UTD be configured to only use certain towers?

A:no

Hey Crash,

Please make it public if you do... :D

I know how to connect to the modem via windows and hyperterminal, but can't seem to get the info i want. Is there a way to get signal strengh and %FER via ethernet. I've got no signal at my pc and i really need to find the best spot for my UTD.

Thanks in advance

Yeah! And I imagine that it will work through ethernet? I wanna try GRES' goodies, but my wife actually needs it for work, so I can't afford to stuff it up with my two left hands carved out of clay :D

String: Bscc xx Cost -xx
Bscc - tower number
Cost - signal level in dB. -80 is better then -83

As rustic said, I'll make it a public app, I don't mind.
I was also thinking of a Linux version in say a perl script, for all the boys with linux boxes :)
Could even try a kylix app if I've got time.

What is the distance measurement, seems to be about 100m units?

it's some kind of artificial values. Don't look on this numbers at all. As much i can quess it is RF delay or something similar.

Thanx :)
BTW, noticed a stronger signal from the distant tower occasionally, especially if I turn the antenna horizontal, especially around 12:00 - 13:00

How do I do this with ipcop (or through a router)

Unfortunately not possible with the majority of consumer broadband routers. They only allow one to configure the WAN port as Routed OR PPPoE, not both.

When the WAN port is configured for PPPoE it has no IP address (the IP sits on the PPPoE virtual adapter), therefore you cant get to the UTD on an IP level.

When you configure it for Routing, you'll get to the UTD, but wont be able to login to the iBurst network as PPPoE is required. Catch-22

Never used IPCop, however a Linux or FreeBSD box can be configured to route to certain (local) address & pass others (default route) via the PPPoE virtual adapter.
