BTW, are there any copyrights / restrictions on publishing the UTD access methods / commands? Was thinking of a site with a Java applet and some (relatively) simple instructions for setup to give tower info.

Obviously interested parties such as ArrayComm and Kyocera (and WBS obviously) are not to keen to make the info public.

Unfortunately not possible with the majority of consumer broadband routers. They only allow one to configure the WAN port as Routed OR PPPoE, not both.

When the WAN port is configured for PPPoE it has no IP address (the IP sits on the PPPoE virtual adapter), therefore you cant get to the UTD on an IP level.

When you configure it for Routing, you'll get to the UTD, but wont be able to login to the iBurst network as PPPoE is required. Catch-22

Never used IPCop, however a Linux or FreeBSD box can be configured to route to certain (local) address & pass others (default route) via the PPPoE virtual adapter.

Ahh, but thats the beauty of a linux box router ... far more configurable. jmn helped me out haven't tested it but I am sure it worked for him and will work for me.

In Pta I've got 2:
1 - Sunnypark
2 - Wonderboom

I seem to get a few others from time to time, but even trust the numbers, they are far away.

Bscc 2 Cost -71 Distance 4 Load 1
Bscc 1 Cost -81 Distance 22 Load 1
Bscc 8 Cost -113 Distance 41 Load 0 (see this one often)
Bscc 16 Cost -112 Distance 35 Load 2
Bscc 0 Cost -113 Distance 34 Load 2

Crash has a list for most if not all of Jhb

Any idea how or what the Distance refers to?

So i think we can asume that the BS # is area spesific ?
EG
Pretoria:
1 - Sunnypark
2 - Wonderboom

Jhb:
1 - Sanlam Centre
2 - Northcliff
3 - Sandton
4 - Bryanston
5 - Kayalami

Dbn :
1 - xxx
2 - xxx

Will do some directional debugging during the week in Pta to see if i'm able to identify the rest of the BS

The distance is apparently the time in microseconds for the signal to travel in one direction. It can therefore help to identify towers, although it has no effect on which tower the UTD will connect to (as GRES says). I've actually had a stronger signal from Sunnypark (with antenna horizontal) than what I ever got from Wonderboom and I confirmed that the UTD used Sunnypark.

Can't help but wonder what will happen if a tower in northern Jhb has the same number as a tower in southern Pta and you sit in between...

GRES's list for Jhb

My Bscc jumps around like a number. I can see Sandton from my window and the modem isa pointed at Sandton City yet it still jumps. I'm getting cost around -85 there and 100+ elsewhere.

Jeez your speed/experience must suck. My cost fluctuates between -62 & -67 and its still not perfect (still have noticible FER%).

Hey GRES how good can the signal get ... -50s ... -40s ?

The best I get is -71, but then my UTD is at the far side of the house under a corrugated iron roof...

uh!!!
THIS IS DECIBELLS!!!
It is logarythmic scale!
Each 3 dB is 2 times more strong signal! 6dB is 4 times!!!

Db's at "cost" is TOWER signal to YOU. YOUR signal to TOWER is unknown. This may be the problem as tower does not see you properly. In this case tower drop down transmission speed. Usage of good directional antenna will improve this as tower will recieve more strong signal FROM YOU and will transmitt @ full speed.

-85 is enough for 70-80% of full speed.
-62 -67 is exstremely high signal FROM tower.

I recently got my hands on one of GRES's antennas and it has made a world of a difference. I happen to be in a white spot (almost no reception) and I have tried many things in the past, including the Iburst antenna.
My speed has basically doubled. I have not had time to check my DB, but I would estimate I am getting 85% of full capacity. I have been downloading some rather large files, and it flies compared to my 384ADSL.

I highly recommend one of these if you are experiencing poor reception or downloads. I had a chat to GRES and he knows what he is speaking about. It is a pity that WBS has screwed this one up, as this guy has come up with a true solution and they turn around and screw the guy! Just goes to show their heads are up their arses! I wish someone would take this product off their hands and give Telkom some real competition.
