Thanks M8... But how much and where can I get one?
Are you cheaper that WBS?
I may need about 15-20 meters of cable... Is there no signal booster available?

Sorry for all the questions, but I need to know these things...

I think that the distance is too far which might cause trouble sending any maybe should try connect to olivedale donno how but will fiddle arial to see.

Gres I also would like to know cost and whether yours is better than wbs and whether it is easy to remove (to take utd home ect)

SOME crazy results seems midrand caused all the trouble and considering the distance u might expect that?

Any Ideas to fix this problem

I have a similar situation where my UTD randomly makes an attempt to connect to a tower in excess of 12KM away ... even though there are closer and better suited towers ...

WBS' response is that the modem determines the "best" tower and we have no say over this ... I am convinced the firmware needs a bit of tweaking (more like a sledgehammer;-)...

Not much you can do except make an attempt to block signals from Midrand...

Exporing a possible solution from Gres ... as his arial is more powerfull and more directional I may be able to stop disconnections (kinda block midrand) and increase my speed at the same time.

Howdey All

I am in the windsor glen area and after connecting to my iburst router I got the following stations and db values back:

Bscc Cost
9 -94
2 -74
20 -98
1 -105
12 -105

My connection is not that great and it almost appears asif there is a lag whenever I do something. I presume the above values are not great?

Anything I can try, will one of those antenas I have read about help :)

Try Gres's antenna ... you are connecting to base station number 2 <-NorthCliff!!!!!!

You need to try connect to say base station 9 Roodepoort.

NorthCliff is generally bad esp during day but 74 is a good signal strength with Gres's antenna (cheaper and better than wbs one) you will get approx -74 or more positioning the arial correctly off of roodepoort and with this signal strength and a decent base station you should always have full speeds.

Pm Gres he is very knowledgable and honest guy.

Not much you can do except make an attempt to block signals from Midrand...

Not to derail the topic

Most of the towers in the northern suburbs are in higher location, so logic will tell me that modem are not sure where to really pick up since there is a lot of variety to choose from, in doing so they end up causing problems of disconnection if there is no smooth handover from one B/S to another.

What are you trying to say ?

Northcliff, is just too high and for sure will send signal to a wider range,
Auckland park if its on top of the SABC radio building
JHB CBD... Sanlam building
Linden...seams to be an average height

But there is a smooth handover, the problem lies in that the tower that it sometimes picks to handover to stops seeing you and you get disconnected, it then trys that tower over and over again and when finally the signal strength of the tower you were connected to comes back and it trys it again you are reconnected.

So if you could choose not to connect to any other tower you would remain connected.

Using a directional arial you can eliminate most of the problems but if the other 'bad' tower (4 u) is in the same direction you are left with the same problem.

Interesting info.
Modem "cost" values are correct only from -100 up. Seems like modem dynamic range is short.
