Telkom is blisteringly quick when your account is overdue. You can expect a notice before the 15th of april. Probably around the 10th.

They give you a month, after that you can expect a swift discontinuation of service. I regularly pay my account a month late out of plain laziness and have never been disconnected.. well not yet at least... [:)]

Formula for relief:
(Car + tow rope + 1st gear) - telkom exchange box = big smile

They seem to warn you lately. My friend is always overdue and gets an sms warning him of pending disconnection. Late last year I got someone form Telkom accounts phoning me in the evening warning me of my overdue account. I think you should be ok on 10 days, but its still a bit risky.

I also did that while I was still living in Bellville. When I moved to Stellenbosch it didn't work. Maybe its up to the local Telkom accounts departments when they disconnect you.

I got disconnected after about 3 weeks. No warnings.
Also got automatically reconnected after paying up at the post office, without having to phone Telkom first.

Then it must just be me. They seem to be very quick to phone me up and say the phonebill still has a certain amount overdue, and they threaten that they will disconnect you quite swiftly, within a few days at least.

Anyone remember the article with Prof Melody?

Melody says: "Telkom's profits are outrageous in the light of their having withdrawn services [due to fraud and unaffordability] from two million of the 2.5-million they had undertaken to roll out services to under their licence obligations.

"Telkom is getting rid of its marginal customers, the poor, and is not providing universal access as it claims to be."

Seems they like to go for the jugular.

You guys must remember that Telkom is a listed company now. They arent a charitable institution. And remember SBC wants to maximise their share value before they dump them.
Telkom will only improve once the SNO comes into operation and SBC leaves for good.

One must also remember that they have a total monopoly over telecoms in RSA. Maybe they should have their profit and salaries capped to zero as long as John Citizen does not have a viable alternative? Any income excess over expenditure could go straight back into cutting cost of their services. Once the playing field is normal they can go back to enjoying the fruits of an open economy.

I agree.
Plus the legal issues are so complex. A small entrepreneur has very little change of entering the market.
I would have to sit for several days perusing the legal issues before I could hopefully try and answer anyone’s statements on these forums. I simply haven’t the inclination to waste my time on such a laborious job.

Telkom just needs to surround itself with corporate lawyers and the whole sorry tale could last for years. The only chance the SA public has is if the major shareholder, 70 %(the state) alters course and redesigns the model currently anticipated. Even if the SNO came into force, I seriously doubt it will bring true competition. The 2 major players, Telkom and SNO could easily adopt cartel pricing models, which I'm sure they have probably decided on doing already. This whole corporate and board room business strategies leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Both government-based institutions, and they have no intention of letting us have affordable communications.

I just read in the Sunday Crimes that Govt is considering granting a FOURTH cellular licence.. not surprising seeing as all cellular networks use Hellkom's connectivity between cell towers, so they will just be making more money. But with all the networks having to pay the same rate to Hellkom what's the point of having more than two? Sure your voicemail greetings will be different, but your prices basically the same give or take a few cents.

Telkom is amazingly fast to disconnect. They litereally phone me two hours before they disconnect. This gets even better. To pay my account I have to physically take my invoice in. I dont trust Telkom's pay machines. They invoiec normally arrives about 4/5 days after I get disconnected. Then there is the hassle of trying to prove (once again :)) That I infact do not know anyone living in Lesotho. And know I don't have a domestic workier who phones out...
