I apologise if this has been discussed previously, had a look though the forums and the FAQs (here and Gmail's), but can't find anything useful.

I have a Samsung D600E on a Vodacom contract. I am trying to get my emails from Gmail sent to my Email inbox on my phone. I have the following account settings on the phone, but just get an "Email network fail" each time.

UserID: ****@gmail.com
Password:*******
SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
SMTP port: 25
Protocol: POP3
POP3 Server: pop.gmail.com
POP3 Port: 110
Requires secure connection

What am I doing wrong? Please help.

Thanks

Your outgoing server will depend on which network you are on, if you on vodacom use smtp.vodacom.co.za and if you on MTN trhen use mail.mtn.co.za as the outgoing mail server..

Thanks, I've set outgoing to the vodacom smtp, but still cannot receive (check for new emails) and if I try to send, it asks for a profile to be setup (with more ID, passwords etc) - huh?

I've setup a friends samsung d500 or d600 to check cellc email and I remember that you had to create an access point profile which gave your internet access and then asociate the email profile with this.

An access point profile usually mentions the APN 'internet'

EDIT: rehd beat me to it

Ah-ha. I see, the Browser has a profile, and the email has a seperate profile - duh!

OK, settings I can make are (my guess in brackets):

Profile Name: (Internet.GPRS)
APN: (internet)
LoginID: (blank)
Password: (blank)
DNS1: (clueless)
DNS2: (clueless)

Any ideas?

Thanks

Accessing Gmail is not possible on most phones due to the SSL requirement but here are a couple of things you need to check assuming your phone supports SSL, below that is an alternate method if your phone doesn't support SSL.

Firstly you need to make sure you have enabled POP access on your Gmail account as explained here: "How do I enable POP?"

Next you need to make use of the correct POP (995) & SMTP (465) ports as listed here: "Configuring other mail clients"

As mentioned in the above posts, you may need to make use of the Vodacom or MTN smtp servers instead of Gmail's.

I suspect you will be unable to connect to the Gmail POP from your phone due to the SSL requirement. You could get around this by making use of another web based e-mail service that can download POP mail for you as well as provide its own POP service, not sure if any exists that support SSL though.

A better option and one that works may be to run a lite e-mail server on your home PC (assuming you have a permanent internet connection). The e-mail server could then download your Gmail mail at regular intervals, you would then connect to your e-mail server's POP and download your mail from there. I make use of the Mailtraq as my e-mail server and since this too has no support for SSL, I route the POP request through Stunnel.

According to the phone specs, it does support SSL. Hmmmm

Any ideas yet on what those DNS entries should be on the profile?

Hold on, I'll order another bottle of Tequila...

I've tried the m.gmail.com with my phone last night, but it never lets me login, it just keeps going back to the login page - perhaps some of the WAP settings are messed up.

m.gmail.com works fine on my 6680. I think it is something to do with SSL

I can't help you with the profile settings but don't forget to correct your port settings, those listed in your original post won't get you connected to the Gmail POP.

I found that unticking "Remember me" box allows me to login

Symbian, Pocket PC & SmartPhone users can make use of ProfiMail to access Gmail accounts.

The other option is to just get Gmail to forward your mail to an alternate account that you can access from your phone.

Try 196.43.1.13

Oh, and try to not listen to the guys talking about email servers on home PCs (WTF?) - your phone is sophisticated tool and can and WILL be able to use gmail in the default email client.

Hey, play nice ;)

I have a Sony Ericsson P910i which is a very sophisticated tool yet it doesn't support SSL using the default mail client. Most phones do not support SSL and as such the above suggestion will help those users. Setting up your phone to connect to Gmail is not as simple as connecting to the Cell-C setup you have done as it requires you make use of the correct ports as well as have SSL encryption enabled.

Aside from that, I have 7 e-mail address that my home email server collects and makes available for my phone to access via one simple quick request.

Eureka, thanks nic777 !!!:D

It works! Thanks to all for the advice etc - now I see my Gmail inbox without having to browse, login etc.

For the next person who will struggle, here is a summary of the settings:

For the Account Settings:

UserID: ****@gmail.com
Password:*******
SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
SMTP port: 465
Protocol: POP3
POP3 Server: pop.gmail.com
POP3 Port: 995
Requires secure connection

For the Email Profile settings:

Profile Name: Internet.GPRS
APN: internet
LoginID: blank
Password: blank
DNS1: 196.43.1.13
DNS2: 0.0.0.0

Thanks again to all those out there helping me sort this out. Hope your bottle isn't finished Rehd.
