Activate Roaming

Wonder if anyone can help. My dad is on holiday in the UK and when he arrived today he realised his roaming was not activated (it always used to be, seems when he recently upgraded his contract, roaming may have been deactivated).

Is there anyway I can get it activated for him if I go into an MTN store? Or call the call centre? What documentation would I need?

You can't do it for him, with MTN at least! They require an ID document to activate it, I had done it once while phoning them, but they are full of crap. He could try phoning them maybe from Skype?

If he has an account on https://mycontract.mtn.co.za he could try activate it there as well. But he would need to be able to receive SMS messages to register an account.

Otherwise, pm Dr_Data if he isn't on leave and ask him to assist, or call them himself.

You can do this by activating the "Allow International Roaming" Service, under Activate Services. Can't remember the SMS requirement, but he can try it and see.

I always roam, just make sure data roaming is turned off

Why does he not just get a prepaid sim over there and put it into his phone. He can just sms you the number once he has done that

You obviously haven't traveled with a credit card. Most people do get a prepaid sim when you get there, but you still need to be able to receive SMS messages from your bank for OTP verification and for Verified by Visa/MasterCard 3D Secure online purchases.

I travel with my credit and debit cards all the time. I don't get OTP for normal purchases it is only for purchases online, or maybe I just plan enough that I don't need to do online purchases while I am in other countries.

I buy Vegas and Broadway show tickets when I am there, as they offer decent discounts closer to showtime. Plus for tours and other things that crop up along the way. Also, if I need to pay people while overseas I cannot add them or do once off payments.

I've asked FNB in the past if I could change to my US (or wherever number) but they said they only allow SA numbers for their system. Cell C does allow you to read your SMS online (when their portal isn't borked) but if it's from a bank they blank it out.

Actually. I always use a dual sim phone (LG G3 D858 at the moment) when overseas.

I have a Vodacom prepaid sim in one slot, with international SMS roaming (no voice or data), so I can receive bank and other SMS's or voice mail notifications, which I then pick up with SkypeOut.

In the second slot I have a foreign local sim card with airtime and data, so I use that for calls and internet access.

Foreign cards that I have used successfully overseas are giffgaff, Virgin UK and Vodafone in the UK, AT&T in the USA, Rogers in Canada, SFR and Orange in France, etc. I have also done this in Mauritius, Croatia, Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, Australia and New Zealand. Maybe a few others as well.

You came out with the snotty remarks. And not all countries have GSM networks, at one point the USA did not. Although most probably do now.

The funniest thing is that you need to enable roaming even when the host country is also using the MTN group.. and worse yet, roaming data still costs a lot wtf. I find the last part hilarious when buying data in that country is cheap too.

Like why not leverage the MTN group membership and the. You can say by having an MTN SIM you get great value across x number of countries..?
