Hi, Just pure speculation! I hear that Telkom is testing ADSL2 etc. My modem (Billion 7402G) allows me to select ADSL, ADSL2 and ADSL 2+. I have been experimenting and found that when I select ADSL 2 or ADSL 2+ the modem syncs. I cannot see any immediate speed increase (I have a 512 Home Line). So I am not sure if I am actually connecting at ADSL 2 etc or whether the modem is going into a fallback mode. Does anyone have any idea of how I could check?
Much obliged.

Whether you are connecting or not at ADSL2+ is irrelevant. You are still going to get only 512k because that is what you are paying for! Even if you had a fribre connection, it would only be 512k!

Main point of my post is "can anyone help check if I am connecting at ADSL 2 not whether I can get a speed increase"! All I really want to know is what type of ADSL connection I am using if that possible, I'm no expert at this stuff. :)

ADSL2+ reached consent at the ITU in January 2003, joining the ADSL2 standards family as G.992.5. ADSL2+ doubles the downstream bandwidth, increasing the downstream data rate to as much as 25 Mbps.

While the first two members of the ADSL2 standards family specify a downstream frequency band up to 1.1 MHz and 552 kHz respectively, ADSL2+ specifies a downstream frequency up to 2.2 MHz. The result is a significant increase in data rates on shorter phone lines.

Please note that changing to ADSL2(+) will not give you a line speed increase unless you are subscribe to the service.

So basically, Telkom is still on ADSL, not ADSL2/ADLS2+/etc ?
Why do they ship routers that are capable of ADSL2/+?

I'm just asking because my girlfriend's brother told me that he installs ADSL2 routers and that is proof that we are using ADSL2.

Because that's how the manufacturers make them.

Because as far as I know none of the modems are manufactured locally and certainly none by Telkom. Telkom just rebrand the modems.

Overseas are switching over to ADSL 2/2+ so it makes sense that the manufacturers make modems that support both the old and the new standards instead of having to make special ADSL 2/2+ only modems.

Wearing an eye-patch doesnt make you a pirate.

You probably cant buy a non ADSL2/2+ router...

Think of it this way: Your motherboard is capable of running a dual core cpu, that is evidence that you must be running a dual core cpu ;)
