ADSL Account Theft

I'm posting this as more of a warning to other dsl account users:
I currently have a 4gig unshapped dsl account with SAOL and a weenie 192kb line. I'm a dedicated WoW gamer :D - This chews about a hundred and odd megs per day incl ventrilo.

To the point I was kinda shocked when I got an sms this morning saying my cap has been used. After doing a bit of digging about and chatting with a tech at SAOL apparently my account has been used by some other ppl (2 others looking at the port activity). I sure as hell have not given my account details out, and according to the SAOL tech adsl accounts have been hacked before in South Africa via unknown means (WTF!). Looking at my account history I see that there was sporadic small amounts of usage (couple meg per day) and then this morning over 4gig was pulled down between 2 ports.

I highly recommend anyone getting *odd* account usage just to check with you ISP on which ports have all been using your account.

I dont know where the fault lies... but currently I'm screwed (as no-one is gonna replace my lost bandwidth) and will be placing fraud charges tonight in the hopes that telkom can track down the offenders via their ports and do something about it.

Just a warning to the rest of you guys - hope no-one else experiences this end of the stick.

I stand to be corrected here but, I think that Telkom can trace the telephone number where your account has been used, well in this case yours and someone else's ... you better make sure that no one you know or given the account to is the culprit ... good luck

To my understanding each person has a unique adsl port number - should be very simple for Telkom to trace but they wont do squat until you've made a fraud case and your isp has logged a fraud complaint with them. I've had this account with SAOL for a grand total of 2 weeks. No-one (out of my friendship grp) is even aware of it.

Telkom can trace the number , however you will need a police case open and a serpoena(not sure if correct spelling) from the court before telkom will release any information, this will cost you thousands of rands before any ball starts rolling unfortunately... :(

Your ISP MUST provide you with the facility to monitor your usage, failing to do so they are responsible to inform you on a daily basis or as you request them to, 2 or 3 times a day.

Haven't heard of an ISP without that facility.

If you're using a router, change your admin password (besides your ISP password) and disable remote logins if possible.

One way people can steal accounts is through your router's web interface.

*NB* Everybody should do this - using default passwords is like leaving your car parked unlocked in Hillbrow.

Not with datapro based accounts  they can't even give you daily totals, only total up/down for the month (telephonically).

Hey Friends,

We provide SAIX Usage Stats via the Saix Stats Analyzer, which has now been setup to work with OpenWeb.

We are currently building our "OpenLounge" - a dedicated customer lounge that allows you to access all aspects of your account.

Kind regards

Generally, there are 3 ways of monitoring your usage that I know of:

http://userstats.adsl.saix.net - for SAIX based VISP's,
http://adsl.telkomsa.net - for TelkomInternet accounts, and
http://users.isdsl.net - for IS based accounts.

Of the three only telkomsa.net didn't give detailed logon history as far as I can recall, don't know what they do now.
thanks, I didn't know about the http://userstats.adsl.saix.net until 5 minutes ago, I was using SASA while it worked

thanks, so long as there is a way to see what the stats are, I am happy

You can check via saix.co.za as DATAPRO accounts are SAIX based.
