ADSL Bandwidht Optimisation for TELKOM

Unfortunately I dont know where to send this idea, telkom does not have an ADSL forum do they? I will also not spend more time than this to let them know.

I am not certain if someone else has already proposed this idea of mine.

ADSL Bandwidth Optimisation proposal for telkom:

By rotating the month end for people, the CAP should be applied different times of the month for different ADSL accounts.

I.e. if my month end would be on the 15th of the month then when I am capped will provide more bandwidth for others. It makes no sense to CAP everyone at the end of the month, and ending up with a lot of unused bandwidth. Therefore the most optimal end of month allocation would be if it were allocated evenly with every day of the month receiving the same amount of accounts. As far as I know telkom pays for 24/7 bandwidth and not for traffic per Megabyte.

Depending on how many people get capped before the end of the month this could improve the potential maximum network utilisation by a large percent.

Hope Telkom Reads this and increases the CAP.
Fat chance of that [|)]

Gabor Barla-Szabo

PS: Please forward this idea to whoever at Telkom ADSL.

They would never do this as we all know the real reason for the Cap is to restrict ADSL access and usability, therefore promoting their other old outdated technologies such as ISDN and Diginet, which ensure them large profits.

Don't think for one second high bandwidth cost is an issue for them, it's not, long gone are thos days, but Telkom will ride it and the SA consumer for the next century if they can.

They don't care about consumers, advancement of SA telecoms/ICT sector or providing decent service, all Telkom care about is their bottom line earnings.

If mr. White or any Telkom representative reads this, go look up the term "Business Ethics"

Hi Gabor

I think this is an excellent idea but I agree with Quik that their restrictions on the service is there for more than simply prohibiting what they call excessive use (what we all know is simply using ADSL for what is was designed to be used for). I will forward this idea to Telkom anyway and see if I get any feedback (I have send it to Mr. White).

The biggest rip-off is the monthly line access rental.

I do not understand the arguement that this has to do with the high cost of international bandwidth. When purchasing a 2nd adsl account, one gets the same amount of bandwidth WITHOUT paying a second line rental fee. Now where is Mr White's arguement now?

Hi Doekvoet

I agree that the biggest problem is the exorbitant line rental. In practically no other country do you pay line rental for ADSL (we are already paying for the line after all). In response to our complaint Telkom attributed this charge to the cost of the DSLAM cards (port costs). One can clearly see that they are fishing for reasons since a more accurate statement might be: “…we want to make certain that we show a great profit from a very early stage of rollout”. This will not be good enough and hence the DSLAM excuse. If ICASA is willing to investigate this matter I think we will see a much lower line rental (if any), but whether they are willing to invest resources in such an investigation is anybody’s guess.

Did we not already establish that the cost per port per user (Telkom's hardware cost) is essentially paid for within a few months?

Yes we did. It was about R1500, so you do the maths.
