ADSL disconnection could happen from 1 October

Openserve has informed Internet service providers (ISPs) of the potential termination of Resell DSL and Openserve Copper Connect (OCC) services within its existing and pre-order fibre footprints.

As part of the notice, Openserve said it reserves the right to cease any or all DSL and OCC services that are within its fibre footprint from 1 October 2021.

“As a courtesy, Openserve will endeavour to inform end-users of our intention to switch their service from copper to fibre and to contact their licensed operator immediately,” it said.

At least it is within their fibre footprints?

TBH, I'm not sure why one would want to be in ADSL if there is active fibre.

What a twist; people who are in an area with fibre coverage who don't want to switch?

I got two different phone calls since Friday. There is no OpenServe fibre in our area (there is Octotel). I think they are just taking a chance.

Take our suburb, for instance:
Frogfoot installed the infrastructure and is asking a premium for their service. Everyone else (Vuma, Vodacom, eg) who want to provide FTTH to this suburb are working via FF, being far more expensive more than(almost double), eg Openserve (who tell me that they cannot provide me with fibre as they do not serve this suburb).

So, between a rock and a hard place I am.

Pricing. Where there is a monopoly there is always un-competitive pricing.

To clarify, I meant Openserve fibre (as per the article: "are within its fibre footprint").

I agree that there are some providers that are inflating their prices as they have exclusivity (as is the case in a number of estates).

Problem is if you are in a flat/complex

A few years back Openserve said we must pay around R60k up front for them to install in the building, and that would be very hard to get passed by the owners as then most people had moved on from landlines to LTE as ADSL sucked so much (long run to the exchange)

Blitz (now Frogfoot) came around and promised the earth on a 3 year exclusivity for "free" and we went with them

Always a fly in the ointment...

If there was active Openserve Fibre here, I'd be one of the first in line to make the switch.

We have Vumatel in our area, so for as long as I can, I'm sticking with my 40Mb VDSL.

Not just areas with Openserve fibre. For some weird reason Openserve considers every provider they provide a service on as part of their fibre footprint. Mind boggling.

I seriously hope this isn't the case.

Same here. We have Vumatel coverage and Herotel is also rolling out. I have PureDSL 40mbps VDSL with Afrihost and I will keep the line active for as long as I can or until Openserve show up at my door and cut the wire and pull it out of my house. I get excellent performance on my line and it is uncapped, unshaped and unthrottled.

So potentially with herotel being installed even though you cannot use anything other than herotel your ADSL might be cut....

On the bright side reading the text on face value it seems that Pure Connect customers are exempt from being disconnected at this stage.

Either way it's back to wild days ahead.

We also have herotel installing here so..... hoping I am not forced to move to them. I would prefer to stay with Afrihost PureDSL or fibre if I can but we have only herotel here.

Vuma pricing is almost on par with openserve though?
