ADSL drop-outs - where could the source of the problem be?

Hi there,

I have a 4MB ADSL line that I rent from Telkom, with the ADSL data provided by WebAfrica.

I am using a TP-Link Gigabit router, in anticipation of the Fibre line that I've requested.

The problem is that my internet connectivity has stability issues. Running a ping to www.google.co.za I've noticed that the best reply time is around 33ms, but it's rarely consistent. Within seconds, it slows up to 3000ms and times out. This timeout could last anywhere between a few seconds to several minutes.

I've asked Telkom to investigate and they say they can see no issues on the line. I've checked with WebAfrica and they too can't see any obvious issues. For the purposes of testing, WebAfrica has granted me access to one of their priority business accounts (no shaping) and I'm still getting timeouts.

I'm at a loss as to what the issue is and how to resolve it. While waiting for Fibre, I need decent connectivity. Advice?

SNAP!

I could copy and paste your post and just change my provider to AXXESS. But I can rant and carry on like a loon, get Axxess to escalate and escalate the escalations but nothing changes but Axxess is all to happy to grab R499 from me every month. I have even told them that I demand one of the executive management to call me and explan why I am paying R499 for a polished turd. I've even told then to get one of their greedy pig executives to call me back, even that doesn't work. So until fibre arrives "stay calm and pass the anal lube"

Have you tested with one of the free accounts many isps offer to see if it makes a difference? Examples,

https://www.afrihost.com/site/page/1gb_free_bandwidth?src=dslcappedpage
https://www.crystalweb.co.za/product-home-capped.php#

If you only want to test the adsl/openserve portion of the network eliminating the ISP,
http://openserve.co.za/open/speed-test/
Run the "Openserve Network Speed Test"
Router Username = guest@openserve and the password = guest
