Hi,

Was just on the #asterisk IRC channel. Someone on there just bought an ADSL DSLAM - what's used in the exchange to connect ADSL lines to the network.

<sivana> the one I got was a CopperEdge 200 used.. with 48 SDSL ports and 24 IDSL ports... $379

So that's $379 US for 64 ports, so about $6 per port or under R50.

OK - so it was used. But tell me again Telkom how you justify R600 for the line rental??

Regards,
Steve

You're comparing Telkom's brand new Cisco and Marconi reliable equipment to someone who bought a second hand cheap crap DSLAM??

I think he was making a valid point. The point is not comparing DSLAMS, it is that with the price of DSLAMS, Telkom can not justify R600 a month. We are paying for all un used ports. If telkom cut that in half they would prob have triple the amt of ADSL users. Do the math!

Oh and 1 more thing, you can buy a Cisco DSLAM for $500

reality is, the DSLAM's used cost a hell of alot more than that. In theory Telkom's pricing is acurate. Whether its fair that you should pay full price for something that you are leasing is a different story.

I think after 2 years maybe you should ask Telkom to please send you the line card you were connected to as you bought it.

Hi Pr13sT and Karnaugh

I agree with that the problem lies in Telkom’s profit policy. Most other companies will look at the long term profitability of a certain investment, but Telkom does not need to do this. They can price a product in such a way that they create profit making opportunities very quickly…not so easy in an economy with many players, but straight forward for a Monopoly.

With Telkom being platinum cisco partners, the price of the DSLAM's should be a lot cheeper. FYI, the copper edge DSLAM's are very good and widely used in the states.

OK - it was a bit of a troll. Still, a real deal.

Average selling price per DSLAM port is no more than $400, with vendors targetting $100 per port for large installs.

I'll also point out that large customers get very big discounts from the likes of Nortel, Alcatel and the other "big telco vendors". For example, in one deal I know about the customer paid less than 1/3rd of the list price.
