Ello,

So I have a 384 adsl line at home which was working fine until about 2 months ago... line went dead one saterday evening at +-17:15 since then its been unstable.

I've test with 3 different adsl modems...telkom router post/ linksys and cnet
2 different pc's as well.

My problem...
All 3 routers show the line (before I dailup) is giving CRC and HEX errors
Now I understand that any line will give errors... I'm not disputing that.
But anywhere from 5-120 errors every second isn't right.
I've been online from 5 hours where I had in total 7 CRC and 2 HEX errors... no problem :D

Today since I've been online from 16:00 the router has reset 6 times as far as I can tell. 4 Times reconnecting by itself and twice where I had to pull the power wait and not even then the line will sync.

Telkoms response:
Over the last 2 months I've logged +- 5-8 calls.. I've given up actually logging calls since the response is ALWAYS the same.

They take me thru the whole reset modem/reset pc whats your account details...are you capped/ shaped or unshaped account bla bla !@#$%^&*( bla.

0800 375 375 ALWAYS puts me thru to have the line tested OR they test themselves ... test ALWAYS come back the line is fine. Sometimes they logg a fault only to have some1 a day or so later phone back to say the line tested fine. Stating anywhere/anytime to anyone that I use the line mostly to play games will send telkom down the road that since I'm NOT on a unshaped account that my problem.

No mater how I try and explain that... IDIOT I'm NOT dailedup at the moment...not surfing NOT gaming nothing...just looking at my router its says the line is giving CRC and HEX errors means NOTHING to the telkom people. In the end they all end up with...SIR can you suft? and can you download? if the answer is yes then your line is fine and we will not log a call for your problem. Get a unshaped account...
I've taken screenshots of the router gui showing the errors as proof.

AKA since typing this message the line has dropped twice...

What I want?
Can ANYONE please tell me how do I go about having this problem addressed by telkom?

Go to www.hellopeter.com and lodge a complaint against them. Be even clearer in your description than you were here.

Let us know what happens ;)

Cool ;) didn't know that, the .com one shows the same site :D :p

alrighty..

how about u post your line stats/health here.

SNR up/down
Attenuation up/down

or sommer your whole stats page - we can then go from there

I had a marconi router which didn't want to work anymore so I replaced it with the Mega100WR router

Ever since then I kept disconnecting when receiving and making phone calls. I had a technician out and he replaced all the filters on my phone jacks and the problem seemed to be fixed.

That evening for no reason at all my line keeps dropping

it will connect for 3 min and disconnects again.

Its been like this for almost 4 days.

Telkom doesn't seem to care cause I already logged 5 faults with no answer from them.

I went into system log and this is the error I got

Unknown ioctl 35143
Both buf and buf_len must be valid.

Anyone know what it means?

it kinda fixed itself I didn't do anything, telkom must have done something on their side.

I took screenshots... how does 1 post pictures/screenshots here?

now the BIG question.....

how far from the exchange do u stay??

that SNR of yours is DAMN LOW!
and your CRC rate is WAAAAY 2 HIGH

damn...i would really have dispatched a tech for this one...

4 suggestions immediately

-)replace RJ11 cables
-)try to run router of UPS line-interactive power
-)check your voice line for absolute silence
-)run setup only with router connected - unplug phones and filters

on your ADSL router POTS screenies that u posted (2 of them)

the CRC errors in the NEAR section - meaning your side - or sending side - is climbing very fast..

do check for any audible interference!

for a 384 line...this is not supposed 2 happen

Old setup:
ok so the line comes in from outside and terminates into a open little telephone plug here the line is split into 2 lines... 1 lines comes to my room where the pc/modem is and the 2nd line goes to the 1st telephone socket in the house...the telephone plugs in here. Inside the socket the line is extended to a second telephone socket where the house alarm system plugs into.

Plugging out the alarm system and telephone leaves me with a unstable SNR jumping between 2-11.
So the problem is outside where the incoming line is split correct?
Well no... out of previous experience I know that if anything goes wrong/funny in the 1st telephone socket the whole thing becomes unstable so...

New setup
I open up the 1st telephone socket and untwist the wires making sure the active line to the outside is touching nothing...SNR jumps to 29. So I'm guessing that the wiring inside the socket is done like a horses ass or the micro filter is not filtering. I have no spare

Since I can't leave the house without any telephones and the alarm down I cut off the points... strip the wire again...twist them together with shorter points and reconnect the wires to the telephone socket. I also move then telephone to the 2nd point.

So now with the alarm connected/telephone behind filter I get the following...
Telkom router tunes me SNR of 16-18
Linksys router tunes me SNR of 11-13

Plugging out the telephone with the filter
Telkom router tunes me SNR 28
Linksys router tunes me SNR 15

I can't explaine why the Telkom router jumps up waaay higher then the linksys however since I used the linksys in the UK on a 24/22/18/16 meg adsl2+ lines and it worked great I trust it more then the telkom router.
I will put the line under load tonight and see which router works better and test if the line still picks up errors and/or dropps

Telkom tech still to make his/her appearance...

exact same behaviour.

my telkom mega 100WR gives me SNR of 14-16 at best
my 5102G gives me SNR of 28-30

well i hope u get sorted...sounds like wiring issue and/or maybe filter too

MrNuts,

With the telephone plugged in the SNR drops by +-11...is this right?
Because I need to add the 2nd telephone back and if the 2 phones are gonna cost me 20-22 SNR dropp..I'm kinda $%^&*(
