Good Day All,

I recently had a 4 Mb Adsl line installed. I live in Glen Marais Kempton Park near the big Spar.

I would like to request if anyone else that might stay in the area that has an Adsl line if you can kindly comment on what is the quality / speed of your line. Do you you often have problems etc etc.

Thanks in advance

Have a shop in that centre. We got 2 adsl lines, 1 x 20mb and 1 x 10mb. Performance is consistent and lines are stable, seldom any downtime, maybe total of 30 hours downtime in the last year or so (011)391....

From the store to the mini dslam on the corner, we running on copper, but from the dslam to the exchange fibre optic.

Hey Sand_man

Thanks for the reply.

Ok i am lost, according to Telkom website Glen Marais has only Support for 4 Mb Adsl. When i applied for my line i was informed no ports available, so a new port had to be installed for me. Do you think i should contact Telkom and find out if i would be able to get more than 4 MB based on you got a whopping 20 MB.......so green with envy right now heehee :)

When i tested last night (nothing else downloading in the background) i barely got a stable 1 Mb download speed both on Telkom speed test and the usual OOKLA one.

I will appreciate your thoughts

If you look at your router stats you'll find snr margins and line attenuation rates. Also listed should be max attainable rates. That would give you a clear indication of what speeds are achievable at your location.

Your 1Mbps speedtest result is disappointing though. They would suggest you too far from the exchange for a decent enough connection. Your snr margins and line attenuation rates will give an indication of distance to the exchange and quality of copper infrastructure.

Snr margins: anything less than 5dB is problematic.
Line attenuation: 20dB and below is great, in fact anything up to 50dB is doable. Above that problematic...

Our 20Mbps line was originally on a port that was copper all the way to the exchange. Could barely manage 512kbps. Harassed Telkom for ages and one day a technician arrived and found an open port on the DSLAM, but the port was reported as faulty. He did a port recreate and the port worked. This particular port ran on fibre optics from the DSLAM to the exchange. Within the space of a couple of hours my flaky 512kbps line went to a stable 20475kbps...

Not sure what your ADSL line rental and obligatory landline are costing you per month but Telkom LTE works very well in Glen Marais. We got a Telkom LTE uncapped account at the store too, with external Poynting antenna, got it on promotion for R599 per month over 24 months and consistently hit 40Mbps+... Don't think you can get this offer anymore @R599 but perhaps @R799?

Anyway, worth considering if you don't come right with ADSL. What do you anticipate your monthly usage pattern to be?

Hey Sand_man,

That is awesome. Yeah if i check my SNR and line attenuation this is what i see in the router stats page:

SNR: 6 DB
Line attentuation: 52 DB

So its really not ideal it seems.

Im guessing this is due to no ports available so they probably moved me to the nearest exchange which has open ports, which is probably still way further than where you connected. Ive now tried to trace which exchange im connected to, but the site appears to be down. My number is 011 972 so its definitely not on the same exchange as you.

I have called telkom and they did a port reset so will test again tonight. The main reason for the line was to get Show max vs Dstv, ive given up on Dstv but i cant even stream from Show max on my current line speed.

Hopefully Telkom rolls out full fibre support soon. I know supposedly in Birchleigh / Birch Acres they have Fibre rolled out, but not 100% sure.

Hi Sand_man,

Yeah applied for the Telkom LTE initially, but Telkom confirmed no more ports available for the LTE in Glen Marais. Even asked for regular updates should ports come available, but to date Telkom confirmed no ports available. The package i am on is the promo where this includes line rental / Adsl and a modem inclusive and uncapped @R799. Telkom called me now and confired the line is now syncing at 5 Mb so will test when i get home, hopefully all is sorted now.

Thanks for the response once again

Yeah, SNR and line attenuation are poor!

Many factors contribute to a poor performing line, I would harass Telkom into improving it, or at least investigating why it is so poor.

I know Bonaero park is also currently getting fibre so it's definitely 'close'! With Glen Marais being one of the most heavily populated and affluent suburbs in Kempton Park, one would think it would be one of the first areas to get fibre. I don't get why it isn't but yes, surely can't be more than a year away? There's also a massive teachers training college that has just gone up on Dann road. Would suspect their need for high volume, high speed data, to be a priority.

The LTE absolutely kills Showmax and anything else you care to chuck at it! Really is a stellar product. Definitely worth considering if you can source it at a reasonable price. Comes with a 300gb FUP soft cap, more than enough for 85% of users.

But good luck with Telkom/ADSL. They do try sorting out problematic lines but sometimes it requires A LOT of persistence. Just keep logging faults until they escalate and resolve. Took me months of harassing before they found me that magical port...

Hi Sand_man,

Indeed you have found the magical port leading to treasures unknown.....I can believe the LTE if i look with my Vodacom LTE on my phone....insane speeds. I concur, i read a post recently that claimed (not sure how reliable the source is) but they indicated that by end Feb 2017 Fibre should be rolled out to most parts of Kempton Park, so we can only hold thumbs.

I have been on the line with Telkom this morning, but naturally agree the stats are poor and agree this unacceptable....but talk is cheap. They indicated i should test again now that the port was reset and contact them should the issue persist. With regards to the new College that is great news as you indicated there will definitely be a need for proper infrastructure so good news for us.

Thanks for the wishes, i do hope it gets sorted sooner rather than later, but will definitely take your advice and harass Telkom until i get a decent line speed.

Keep well

Hi Sand_man

Just want to find out the 20 mb line you have is it vdsl and what are you currently paying for it (line rental package etc inclusive) i have now been told by telkom they can upgrade me to 10 mb. So if i get 2mb on a 4mb line i should get 4mb on a 10 mb line at minimum hahahah so will see ....

Hi Sand_man

Thanks for the reply. Thats pretty cheap. Telkom reckon 40 mb is supported in Glen marais for vdsl. They want 1500 for the 20mb vdsl package but thats way too much. Unfortunately im tied to telkom for 24 months now but will check out cybersmart

R475 is just for the ADSL line, no data and excluding land line. I've got VOX fatpipe accounts for the data portion.

Good Day All,

I received a letter from Open Serve indicating they will be rolling out Fibre in Glen Marais estimating within the next month or so. (I stay near the corner of Dann road and Monument Road.) I called the number on the letter whereby the Gentlemen confirmed this is legitimate.

I would like to find out if anybody else in the Glen Marais area received the same letter and if they possibly can confirm if this is true.

Thanks in advance

Charl
