Hello Armitage.
I cannot really comment on your topic as I have been with MWeb for several years now and can't make any comparisons. As all ISP's buy from Telkom, it's pointless at this stage to actually have another ISP. I stayed with MWeb when I got ADSL as I didn't want to change my emails etc. I so far cant really be critical of MWeb as they have not given me any problems. They do offer spam and anti virus filters which is a blessing, but also gimmicky if you are an IT professional. Their pricing is slightly higher, but I assume this is because the company is bigger than others and has more staff and expenses. I think the other reason I stayed with MWeb is maybe a stupid reason, but could become true. When and if the whole thing goes open to market forces, I will at least for one not be with Telkom and probably be with one of the market leaders, as I say again for what that’s worth. I of course bought my own modem at the beginning. I bought a Zyxel 650R-31 ADSL Router which is a solid modem. Your modem choice is also something that you need to address. What modem does Telkom offer? Perhaps buying your own modem might avoid having to buy another modem later on. I’m not sure, but I think Telkom's modems only work on their network or at least that was the case.
You didn't say if he had a modem yet?
He should perhaps buy and ADSL router with the Wireless feature. This would be more future proof.
I also think you should explain to this fellow the negative side as well. E.g., the cap and port shaping. He might change his mind when he finds out about the "fine" print.
