ADSL line very slow - different speeds on different ISPs

Hi

I've been with Afrihost for a couple of years and for the best part of this year our 2meg line has been so slow that the ADSL is basically unusable. I've done a speed test on the Telkom guest account and also bought a couple of gigs from Webafrica to compare on a different ISP.

The download results of the speed tests are as follows:

Afrihost: 0.04mbps
Webafrica: 0.50mbps
Telkom: 1.00mbps

So I guess my question is why would different ISPs give me different speeds and why don't I get the 1mbps of the Telkom guest account when I switch back to my ISP? Is this a Telkom problem or an ISP problem?

Thanks!

What I did

I was with Axxess when they used the IS backbone, and the account got throttled to death. So I signed up for a test account with Mweb, the difference in speeds was unbelievable. The nice thing about the test account is that it's free for a week (if memory serves) and you can then go to town so as to test what the account, in conjunction with your line is capable of. You can also use your modem to run tests on the line and see what's happening. I can see what speeds my line is capable of via my modem, and often this helps me identify the problem much quicker - also stops me breaking stuff.

I was able through process of elimination, to diagnose where the problem lay - it was part modem, part cabling, part surge protection and software settings.

Sounds a bit hairy I know but your problem could be as simple as the line not running at the speeds it's supposed to. You can also ask Telkom (10210) to rest the port on your line - I've had cause to do this quite a few times this year and it fixed the problem I was having.

Thanks for the advice!
I will definitely do the port reset as a starting point and take it from there.

I am with Axxess as well. My internet is really slow. I called Axxess to reset the port and they did but it is still slow.
Do you think if I requested port reset by Telkom it would make a difference?

You shouldn't be seeing these slow speeds on our network :( Please send me a PM with your account info and I'll take a look at where these issues are coming from :(

I've just sent you a PM Afriguy, but not sure if it went through. Let me know whether you've received it.

Cheers

Just to close things off here, Telkom reset/changed my port this morning and that sorted out the speed issues.
