no.

A modem is a device that can (typically) establish a connection through a public medium (phone line.)

A router is a device that can direct network traffic to (typically) the traffic's destination.

Be wary of purchasing a "Broadband router". The term "Broadband router" does not mean it includes a modem, it means that a modem can be connected to it and the router can establish the connection through the modem. If you want to purchase an "all-in-one" look for a router that includes a modem.

An ADSL Modem/Router is a Router with an integrated ADSL modem. That’s basically it.

An ADSL modem can also be a USB device while a ADSL Router generally connects to the LAN via ethernet or wirelessly.

router has the firmware built in, runs thru your LAN. can have a always on connection
modems run the software off the PC ( which you have to install ) and runs thru USB. connects via broadband connection.

Don't confuse the original poster! :D
A router has absolutely nothing to do with ADSL - if he buys himself a plain Ethernet router he's going to be really pissed off.

modems run the software off the PC

Nonsense - the ADSL router/modem combos have the modems built in and are able to handle the connection on their own without the use of a PC.

a ADSL modem only has one WAN Port whereas you can normally link 4 PC's on a ADSL Router.
