Hi

Can someone help me out pleeeeze, I had my new ADSL line installed today, using the USB connector instead of the Router to which my PC connects via Ethernet.

I know that ethernet is obviously much faster but the bottleneck remains on the Line Speed.

My question is this; would the transfer rate from the internet be faster than the tx rate of the USB Connection, thus slowing down my connection speed, or possilble adding to the latency?

I am sorry for not giving the "Vitalstatistix" :D of the Modem, but I am only seeing it tonight;

Any feedback, weblinks or suggestions will be helpful - THANKS FOR A GR8 FORUM.

so basically you are saying your PC is connected to the router with the USB cable and not a network cable?

Yeah; Its not really a Packet Router (I think) but the device is connected directly to your PC; but I am using an older machine where I want to install something like Linux and use that as my firewall and router solution; which is apparently just as good;

But, someone tried to explain to me that I made a big mistake by taking the USB version of my "connection-to-the-internet" instead of the Ehternet (Via Router) connection; insinuating that the USB port on my PC is too slow to manage the traffic presented by the connection speed to the internet which is 384kb/s if I am not mistaken.

Does it make sense - sorry having a bit difficulty explaining myself!

I've found this online here -
http://www.necel.com/en/faq/commu/com_USB.html

Quoting that page: "

What is the approximate transfer rate supported by USB 2.0?

For data itself, the transfer rate is 480 Mbps (60 Mbytes/s).
Like other communication standards, the format of the packets that are transmitted with USB is specified, and information such as addresses or CRC is appended for transfer.

Moreover, there is an idle period between packets, and the transfer speed is not a uniform 60 Mbytes/s over the whole duration of the transfer.
The transfer rate depends also on the system, and can vary largely depending on limitations on the PCI side, limitations of USB devices, PC performance, the driver, and so on.

In a PC environment, NEC Electronics evaluations have found the transfer rate using USB 2.0 storage devices (HDD) to range between approximately 20 Mbytes/s and 25 Mbytes/s.

According to that; the tx-rate of USB 2 is much higher than my connection to the internet, sheez I would have loved to have a 25 megabytes per second connection to the net... lol ...

anyhow, it seems that there should be a bottleneck on streaming data; how well will it handle bursts of data I wonder....

More questions; your input recommendations and suggestions are welcome if you want to make them welcome :D
