ADSL outage

Around 02h00 this morning 2 November 2003 I discovered that I was unable to browse the Internet. A call to Telkom's helpdesk was quickly answered and I was told that the International circuit "to Manhattan" was "flatlining" but that they were aware of the problem.

I then discovered that I could ping Microsoft.com (around 500ms latency) and that I could ftp to ftp.microsoft.com. Another call to the helpdesk -- this time the lady put me through to a chap from SAIX. He claimed that there was a router at Rosebank that had scheduled maintenance -- they were replacing cards. He further said that the outage was expected and that all SAIX ISPs were notified in advance.

I would also like to be notified of planned outages (scheduled maintenance). It's great if Telkom Internet knows, but they do not do anything to disseminate this info to their customers.

I use my ADSL line to maintain client infrastructure. Very often the client's maintenance slots fall in the time between 00H00 to 06H00 on a Sunday morning. I plan the maintenance accordingly, but it does not help me if I cannot get to the machines from the Internet.

What I would like to see is regular emails from my service provider informing me of scheduled maintenance that affect the performance and availability of the ADSL and Internet infrastructure. That way I can plan around their changes, and do mine when they are not doing theirs.

I also need to know how long outages will last. My clients insist on this and I usually draw up a project plan with timeframes. I cannot just take down critical infrastructure and then bring it up when it suits me.

The outage lasted beyond 05H00 -- after that I got tired of waiting and went to bed. I did ask the chap from SAIX how long it would last but he was adamant that no-one knew.

Can any user from an ISP other than Telkom recall being informed of this outage?

I agree. We should be notified of planned outages. Mainly SAIX and telkom but the ISPs are to be blamed as well. With my previous dial up connection with IS i was notified many days in advance...

Hi JFrancis and Neobyte

I agree fully. We suggested this to Telkom in previous correspondence, but for some reason they don’t feel they have to inform users. This forum is a perfect place where they can make simple posting about outages, but again they refused this offer. I hope continued pressure from the media and other organizations will make them realize that they have a responsibility towards us.

And I thought my router finally kicked the bucket... I was about to crack but then I saw I was able to ping telkomsa, so prob's not on my side.

SAIX do notify everyone off all their planned work and network faults.
Check out http://www.noticeboard.saix.net and just use a blank username and password. You could also subcribe to a mailing list that will mail you these faults and planned work.

First try and find the solution before escalating the problem

Hey Sspy -- you seem to be quite a sleuth!

I appreciate your point, but my contract is not with SAIX, but with Telkom Internet, so I expect them to inform me timeously of the outage, before it happens. That same applies to any other ISP that gets a maintenance notice from SAIX.

My project Scope and planning went out last week Wednesday to my clients.

Your terse reply seems to suggest that I was at fault because I did not scour the websites on the Internet for clues as to why things are not working the way they should.

wow, sorry guys, maybe I's all my own fault...[:I]

This forum would be a good place.

But Telkom has e-mail addresses for most of us.

It would be mere courtesy to send an email to each user informing them well in advance of planned maintenance. They even know from where each user is connecting - so they have the ability to only inform those that will be affected.

But then we know what Telkom's attitude to customers are - so I doubt if they will ever get this polite.

jfrancis I just find that most of the times you can solve your own problems 100 times faster than telkom ever can.
