Well I've just signed up with Amobia (WISP). R799 p.m for a Mbps synchronous connection (4Mbps up and down). Had a chat with the sales consultant..they allow 250GB before they start throttling you connection to half the speed. One thing though, p2p is also throttled. I will be using it mostly for gaming, netflix and youtube so that's fine with me.

They should install the antenna sometime this week or early next week

I also looked at them. I use quite a bit of torrent download for my series, will call them later today to find out more.

Cheers

just got off the phone with Charl (TelkomZA)...and all my hope is gone after the conversation...

I got 1 or 2 other people trying to find some stuff out for me but I'm pretty much done now I think...

Will probably also join Amobia pending some stuff I need to know (speed, cap in terms of when you get throttled and most importantly I need LOW pings for my gaming)

If I go with Amobia, I'll probably do that "hotspot" thing...as I am situated nicely on top of the hill in Burgundy...so that way you guys can then maybe connect to me?

Some guys came to check connectivity from me to their closest tower on saturday. They said I had a very good signal to the closest tower. Lets hope this ISP is worth it

Thanx Ripstorm, please keep us posted with whatever info you get...I'll do the same

I'm giving it till tomorrow before I contact Amobia, as there are some stuff I still need to find out (my telkom contacts and then of course the performance stuff on Amobia).

According to the Amobia thread, the connections seems really good...I like the MUCH higher upload you get with them!! Really hope they can offer a stable low latency as this is a big requirement for me.

I'm looking at their site...I don't see a 4mpbs connection option...highest is 3mpbs...am I looking in the wrong place, or don't they offer 4mpbs anymore?

please confirm

You have to phone them. The site is a bit out of date

Just spoke to one of Amobia's agents, and they are sending a rep to my house to double check the signal strength. I asked him about online gaming especially EU, and he advised that they do prioritize gaming ports on request at no extra cost. Its apparently a setting that needs to be done only once. When i asked him about torrents, he said that its not a problem. It does not always run on full speed, but its not banned. He said to me that i must just let it run throughout the day :wtf:

So this looks to be my solution. The sales agent told me that they are making a killing in our area. He already signed up 7 other people.

Strongs to the others out there

Beware, Installation is a bit steep though. They're asking R1699 for a complex installation and R499 for a router.

I also spoke to one of the sales guys earler (Mark) and we had a nice chat. He has my details to arrange a site visit.

In my heart I still want a fixed line, as I know if you HAVE it it will eventually gets replaced with VDSL, then fibre, then (whatever else comes then...we won't be alive anyways:D)...and I'm a little concerned about pings...we had a nice chat with regards to that. I need <50ms locally (on anything), and <200ms (international, EU) at ANY time.

I was told it would be R999, but it could be an extra R700 depending on what Equipment i need (so obvioulsy they will charge the extra R700). He did not mention anything about any routers. I thought i could use my own

What did he say? It's the same guy that helped me. Spoke to him this morning

ag he was very friendly and informative. I asked specifically about the equipment used...and he confirmed it's Mikrotik. I had a bit of an issue with this as I already have several wireless up at my house using Mikrotik (I'm on CTWUG), so I told him very specifically that they must please not interfere with the signals I'm already using...I suspect that might take a short while to figure out. I offered to use my own equipment, as (like I said) I already have Mikrotik equipment up...but they insist of using their own, for warranty/replacement situations...it's actually better that way...then they can't blame you for hardware and you blame them for connection issues or whatever...keep responsibility in one place, it's easier to troubleshoot problems.

Hmm I thought you need a special router for this connection? Let me mail Mark quickly because I just paid an extra R499 for a router..

Response from Amobia:

Hi Jacques

Unfortunately the normal ADSL router’s are not compatible on our network, as our network requires a wireless router that has broadband wireless capabilities.

I'm speechless.

yup...was quite a day...to be honest though I still don't understand Telkom's logic...but I'm forcing myself to move on at this stage...they just clearly don't give a **** about their customers...and so therefor they don't deserve to have any, and that's why I'm also looking for alternatives now.

The guys from Amobia just left my house after coming to do a survey...my LOS(line of sight) is good enough that I apparently have several connections they can choose from, so that's promising. I'll probably know more tomorrow/later in the week, and I'll continue to update here as things progress.

I am not so convinced that Amobia is the answer. Their is many complaints about them regarding slow connections etc. what to do. Please do inform about your experience. I am feeling sick. :crying:
