Freaken Telkom just downgraded my line. Shows 20mb on my router but on ADSL checker it now shows 4mb and looks like they don't have after hours technical support anymore... I so want to play games dammit
I bought a new vdsl router and my line was changed from adsl 20 to vdsl 20. What a big difference in speed. My speed is constant above 19meg and my upload 2.1meg. Btw, Charl from Telkom called to say that my line support 40meg and he would ask for a window period so that I can upgrade to 40. Ai, that window at the exchange did not happen. Maybe he forgot.....

I got upgraded to 20mbps...but it seems Afrihost and Telkom don't know how to talk to each other...I've asked REPEATEDLY that Afrihost must confirm Telkom put me on a VDSL profile...but I'm still stuck on the ADSL profile.

I'm also pretty sure my line will handle 40...not sure exactly why Telkom insists I must take the 20mbps line...I mean...who gets to decide this?...surely it must be me? I mean if I'm not happy with the speed I will downgrade and happily pay whatever fee is involved with downgrading...but let me TRY the line first instead of flatout refusing to switch me over!!!

Anyways...I'll sort all of that out next week...

oh...btw Riaandb which router did you get? I got the PACE router but I don't see anywhere what the max attainable rate is...my SNR etc does look very good tho...

I get the same stats than you. I ordered the Xyzel router from Webafrica. Webafrica upgraded the line within minutes from adsl to vdsl.
According to Charl, we can get 40meg, but according to the people at networks, we are just over 1km from the exchange, hence the 20meg on the adsl checker. But we can get 40!! Our copper is only six months old. Anyways, our line stats are good enough to get 35-36 meg. Telkom was suppose to open the exchange for a day, so that I could upgrade to 40. Not sure why only for a day, it should be my choice to decide when to upgrade. Please help and let us fight for 40!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am on 40vdsl. Getting max 33mbs. I'm in Cabernet street.
Line with Webafrica, running at full power!

wow that's really nice...for you that is :/

If I'm correct I "should" be closer to the exchange than you...maybe I should just try and ask again to be switched to a 40mbps line...did you have a lot of hassles switching over?

thats very true. I am the only house in the street on vdsl 40. Charl arrange it. It took two weeks to get approved. My apologies, I can't access my router! I recently changed my password, and I can't remember the password! Just a word of caution, My snr dropped to 7 with the cordless phone unplugged. If I plugged the cordless in, my snr dropped below 6. and you need a snr o min 6 or more for a quality line. o

Hey...could the guys in our area that switched over to VDSL please post a speedtest? I need to get some ammunition against Afrihost/Telkom.

My line was upgraded to 20mbps VDSL last month and the speeds (down & up) was brilliant...till late last week...now the max upload speed according to speedtest.net has been consistently 0.8-0,9...nothing higher than 1mbps...where it was 1.9 originally.

They "claim" it must be the lines in my area. This has now been an entire week of dicking around giving me stupid excuses.

Please post some speedtests guys :D

ONLY the VDSL users please.

Grab a free 1GB capped account from WebAfrica and/or CrystalWeb, which are both on IS' network, that'll at least tell you whether its line or ISP.

I did that with a CW test account, and got the same results as with my Afrihost account.

End of last year, I moved my line to Afrihost...so I kinda have to talk to them if there's line issues. From what I see in my own speedtests...I almost wanna go as far as to say that my upload speed is intentionally limited at the speed I'm getting...but I have no proof.

My idea here is to show Afrihost/Telkom...look, here are other guys in my area who's getting the correct upload speeds, so there is clearly then a fault with my line...fix it or send someone out to fix it.

The other option is, you guys also have crappy speeds and then we take Telkom on together, seeing as 20mbps VDSL's upload speed is supposed to be up to 2mbps, and 40mbps VDSL's upload speed is supposed to be up to 3mbps. This is consistent with pretty much every single VDSL speedtest I've seen so far. Just suddenly since end of last week my performance plummeted, and my upload speed never got back to what it was.

That would suggest line I guess. Sorry can't contribute further, as a lowly 2M user I'll just be a spectator for the rest of the discussion :whistling:

no worries, I'm sure Riaandb will post some new speedtests for me once he reads this :D

Idiots...they think I will accept the lower upload speeds...pfftt...the speed I have now I had when I was still on the ADSL profile...I specifically asked for VDSL and went out to buy a VDSL router from Telkom so that I could enjoy that extra 1mbps extra upload speed...now they tell me speeds "fluctuate" and I must be happy with what I'm getting. Yeah...because anyone would be "happy" with 50% performance loss...that's "normal"....I say again...IDIOT!!!

/rant over :D

Get away from Afrihost! Not even their website is working tonight! I posted a speedtest earlier this week, I can repost, but oi, it takes so long for me to find the buttons to do an upload! My speed is consistent 24h a day on Webafrica. They have great capped offerings.
