Hi guys,

I don't know if I'm slow or something, but I found this nice app for the adsl router. It updates your usage and will make your "virtually static" by redirecting your ip to the server of your choice... also got a feature to restart your router at the appropriate time u set it to, so you don't have to do it manually every 24 hours. get it at: http://www.tucows.saix.net/preview/318352.html

Hope this helps [:D]

That thing used to be free.

For the modem hanging thing (the Telkom one), get it swapped out at a Telkom branch if it's an old model.

There are free services like noip or dyndns that do the same thing.

You could do much better by just selling the Telkom Marconi Piece-of-Trash-System router and buying a D-Link DSL300G to operate as an ethernet bridge.

Then, get yourself an old Pentium machine with 32MB or so of RAM, and install FreeBSD on it.

Use the PPPoE client provided by the FreeBSD ppp program and NETGRAPH modules.

I never even notice the 24-hourly disconnect as FreeBSD's PPPoE client regards it as an error on a permanent line, and immediately re-establishes the connection without even so much as resetting the interface.

I always have the same IP address for ten consecutive days, because this PPPoE client is fully aware of the DHCP standard and forces Telkom's DHCP server to allow it to use an IP for the full ten day period allowed by DHCP. If course, this would be force-reset if I ever reached my cap, but I haven't, so it isn't.

Then, just install a DynDNS client of your choice and have the ppp program execute it's update script each time the link connects.

Same effect, except MUCH better performance, and free.

Yup, been using FreeBSD to establish my ADSL connection and it has never failed to reconnect even once, its "always-on" in theory :) I also use ipfw for bandwidth throttling and the likes, very useful indeed.
