adsl - simple ftp

Hi,

I am attempting to run a simple ftp server behind my adsl for the purpose of sharing files amongst some of my friends. I do not care that the IP is dynamic, as when I am going to need the ftp service, (seldom) I will simply give the current IP to those who need it and they can then connect. (for the next 24 hours or so)

Problem: I have setup the ftp service, and it is listening on (private address) port 21. It's a separate machine from all my others, and so ftp'ing from any other PC in the lan works 100%.
However, in the PAT settings I have selected to foreward TCP port 21 traffic to the (private address) ip address of the machine running the ftp service. Port 21 of course.

Surely now, connecting to my (actual) IP on port 21, should then simply foreward the request to port 21 of the ftp server? Seems logical, but it does not work. From the outside world, attempting to connect to my (real) ip address, just times out with connection refused eorrors.

Is there a setting elsewhere on the router that I need to check other than the PAT setting to make this work?

Any help appreciated.

Yes I am running a firewall (Sygate), but during the time I have been trying to get this to work I have disabled it completely to make sure that it's not causing problems.

I simply cannot think of a reason why this should not work?

Check your ftp config files to make sure it allows connections from outside your LAN- anonymous or otherwise.
